Mango blossom. Fruit has just started coming out.
I notice that only flowers with red stripes are bearing fruit and not the yellow. So are the red female and yellow male flowers?

Till date when ever I shoot, there is plenty of space to zoom with my feet, so I have been using primes - 35mm and 50mm for most of my shots. Today I visited our neighborhood temple and decided to use the zoom as zoom should be - frame the shots to fill the view. So here are the shots in four parts.
1. Overview

Continuing the temple visit.

The images shown here are details of terracotta panels. These were commissioned recently to give the temple a different look (compared to most modern temples)

In spite of tight framing with zoom, most of the images had to be cropped to accommodate their varying aspect ratios. One thing that I have noticed is that most of the shots require perspective correction. So next time I will do either of the following
. Shoot the images head on, so that there is no trapezoidal perspective distortion
. Try and correct the perspective in software

Of course nothing beats the Perspective Correction lenses, but that acquisition can only be justified if I do a lot of Architecture/Temple shots (and get paid for it!), till then Software is sufficient.

No temple visit is complete without the idols.

Shiv is represented by the Shiv Linga and rarely by an Idol. Women worship the Linga and pour milk, water and coconut milk on the Linga.

I have been thinking of whether it is worth while shooting with the primes, when I do not need the extreme DOF or low light capability. On the screen the images from the primes look definitely better, but I just could not put what was better. So I decided to first test the sharpness at the 55mm end with the 50mm prime.

18-55, 100%

50mm 100%.

Definitely the prime is sharper and has better micro contrast.
Note. The 18-55 has lesser minimum focussing distance and is marginally longer than 50mm prime. Hence for same object size it has a larger image size.

After taking a lot of images of flowers at minimum distance, I perceived that the images at 55mm are much bigger that with the 50mm prime. A quick check and I learnt that the zoom has a closest focusing distance of 0.28m while the prime 0.45m. That results in a much larger image with the zoom.

The zoom is giving me an image of around twice the size of the prime.

You will not regret buying it.

As far as IQ goes, given the right conditions it is difficult to differentiate the images taken with this lense from those of a medium cost prime. This lense is best in FAT light where you can shoot F8 at 1/1000 or faster. It is suprisingly quite a good macro lense (though more like 1:3 rather than 1:1).

I've taken a good selection of shots using the entire range and I'm very impressed.
