Thank you all for the advice and help. The seller agreed to a return and refund. I was talking to a friend, who is a photographer, about it and she said that in her opinion it isn't a very good lens so I am looking around at different options now before I buy anything else.

Actually its very good lens and for a kit lens is pretty sharp, remember zoom lenses wont be as sharp as prime lens .
These 18 -55 mm kit lenses are available at Amazon for a reasonable price new , so much better than saving a litte bit by buying second hand.
Remember if its only saving a small amount on that particular lens as its not a big value lens new , its often much better to buy new in the first place . And you get full warranty and any problems return is met by Amazon.
If the lens was something like a nikon 70- 200mm 2.8 then buying used makes more sense.
Hope this helps .

The new 18-55 is a fantastic lense. For its price (at least in India) it is only beaten by the 35mmF1.8G DX. It is quite sharp at F8 and the lense focus quite close, so you can even shoot macro of flowers at the 55mm end. The VR is very well implemented, so its slow speed need not wory you while taking slow hand held shots.
