18-55 VR Noise

I just acquired an 18-55 VR kit lens. I wanted to know if the noise being emitted was normal. I know its got the SWM (Silent Wave Motor), just wanted to know that it's not suppose to be entirely quiet - like a soft, smoth grinding noise. Also, What is the closest you can place this lens to an object for it to be sharp.

Good morning! According to the specs, closest focus is .9 ft or .28 m. Regarding noise, there is a motor so there is some noise but I can barely hear it on mine and after using a bit I do not even notice it. It should not be extremely noticable.
