18-55 Replacement

Any reason no one has mentioned the 18-300? I have read some very favorable reviews, there's significant fish eye at 18mm, but can be corrected in LR with lens corrections.... Still quite pricey though.... I think I will be ordering a 18-105 as your thread has convinced me.... Even though it overlaps my 70-300 by 35mm, it could in some instances mean I wouldn't have to change lens to get that little bit more reach....

I have an overlap also.. 18-105 and 55-300.. I find I am doing more with the 18-105 than I did with the 55... I am loading the 300 now only when I expect to grab (or try to grab) some wildlife...

After reading all the posts, tomorrow I buy my 18-105. Getting tired of swapping between 18-55 and 55-200 (both upgrades with VR from kit). I was struggling between 18-105(kit for my D90), 18-200 (cost), 18-270 (overall quality) and 17-50 (cost). Looks like the 18-105 is the best of all worlds: good working range under normal usage, cost. Might use money saved to buy better flash or mirror lens. Thanks for all the comments.

As an Update:

I have had the lens almost a week now and have used it almost everyday.. I have done industrial, product (though product is better with a prime), pets, scenic and buildings.

I have been very pleased, quality appears as good as my 18-55 and I am enjoying the extra range I have. I do not have any regrets over this purchase.

Nice job Pat. I really like my 18-105mm thanks to this site :)

Thanks Joe, listening to people here is what sold me... not thta it was the "best" but that it was practical for my needs. It has proven to be just that. I find it rides on the camera most of the time...

I need to make a correction, the Heron pic was with the 55-300. I changed it for him... then back to the 105! :)

Out of curiosity, did you sell your kit lens when you bought this or kept it as a spare? The kit lens isn't really worth very much money, I don't think it's even worth selling!

Got my 18-105. Too late today for pics. I kept the 18-55 since I bought the lens upgrade with VR. Keeping it "just in case" I upgrade from D90. I'll put it on the D90 as a "truck camera".

I replaced my 18-55 for 16-85.

18-105 was never an option cos of my 55 - 300. Once I considered the 18-200 but of its sliding out by itself tubes by taking photos downwards, did lots of tests, it was an no option again.

The 18-55 is now on the D80 which I gave it do my little daughter.

I still have my 18-55. I know it is not worth that much but I did attempt to sell it.. offers were ridiculus so I at this point, I have kept it.

Might be worth keeping just in case you ever get a new body and want to sell the D5100. As a pair, it would probably sell faster.
