Hey DaveW and other home printers... light adjustment Q

@DaveW, I know you use an Epson R2000 at home. I've got one and am starting to print some stuff for a gallery (first run) and I'm finding I need to do a considerable amount of lighting adjustments from my screen to what I'm seeing on the printer. In my testing it seems that if I do a Levels...

Next Time You Lament Not Having A Piece Of Equipment

I'm an amateur photographer with a good job, a great wife, and no kids. I should save more money than I do, but I love stuff, and I'm really bad at denying myself a toy when I have a serious urge to try something. After reading this, I'm thinking that I need to replace my passion for gear with...

    Jake's Backdoor Hippie-palooza, 2014 Edition

It's a very odd thing, but when I stick a square crop tool around it it's fine. I checked and it does have a touch of pincushion. I thought I'd corrected that, but perhaps not.

Saving A "Bad" Picture - A Quick, Step by Step Journey

Actually, if you look closely, there are shadows on the right edge. I'm using a pair of mismatched, third party flashes, and getting them close to matched is an exercise in frustration. I know no magic on how to make it happen other than to try it, move them, try it again. I ran them both in...

Saving A "Bad" Picture - A Quick, Step by Step Journey

OK, so I was taking a picture this morning, a picture I'd done before and one that I'd planned and set up for - a chess board taken from above and lit from the sides. The one thing I didn't do, even though I thought in advance that I should, was once again take into account that I needed the...

Not a chance. You need 1/1600 to freeze the wings, which I didn't remember until after seeing this shot. It was a little cloudy, so I didn't crank the shutter right away even though I'm OK with ISO 6400. Here's one at 1/1600. Not as good a shot, but it shows those powerful little wings.

Revisited an old shot from a couple months ago in an attempt to try something else for a "symmetry" shot. Raised the flashes a bit and kept the color this time.

If you do, get yourself an RF shutter remote too. It makes things a lot easier. Do I lose points if I was in a comfy chair with a cigar instead of holding that camera up and waiting? LOL

Messing with layer blend modes, and not much else. Original photo... Duplicated it in another layer and started flipping through blend modes. When I hit Exclusion I got this and really liked it... ...but it wasn't punched enough for me. So, I created a new layer from what I had so I...

Cleaning Your Camera - Do it right and you may be cleaning your sensor less often

With the myriad, "Is this dust or oil?" and "How do I clean my sensor?", questions that pop up here I was thinking about putting together a post on how to best avoid getting your sensor dirty. And while I may still do that, this post from Digital Camera is a good start to learning how to best...

    Jake's Backdoor Hippie-palooza, 2014 Edition

Thanks - it's what I was going for. I'm still just a little annoyed that I missed it by a hair - I'm standing just a little too far to the left, so even though it appears to be framed correctly it's not perfect. I've started noticing that my shutter button technique is lacking and I will take...
