    Hmmmmm, -D40 capable of HDR?

Since the D40 doesn't have bracketing mode, here's a "hack" that should give you the results you're looking for: First, it's important to realize that DSLRs do not have a wide dynamic range like our eyes do. Not even the most expensive ones. If there are a lot of different lighting going on...

    B&W Harley

Every Tuesday night is Biker Night down at a local watering hole. They usually have live bands as well...but I go for the bikes! I went with a B&W conversion on this one because I really liked the way it brought out the texture of the hand grip. C&C welcome!

    Your rights as a photographer

For a very recent example, check out this article. In the U.S., it is perfectly legal for you to take photographs in public situations. I have seen this debate rage on over discussion forums, but the fact remains: This is true anywhere in the U.S. and is not unique to NYC or Washington D.C...

    Any Strobists Here?

Is anyone else into off-camera flash lighting, a la Strobist style? In a previous thread, I posed a question about non-Nikon flashes. Yesterday I decided to take the plunge to start building my setup and did in fact buy the Strobist recommended LumoPro LP160. Initially, my setup will be...

    Favorite Inexpensive Photography Gadget?

As for myself, I have two low cost gadgets that are in my bag: The first is just a bit over the $25 price cap, but I think it bears mentioning here because it's incredibly useful and is also along the lines of Eduard's suggestion. I use Professor Kobre's LightScoop, which weighs in @ $29.95...

    Last Letter Game

Let's get interactive and start up a photography game! This one is called the "Last Letter Game" and is very simple. I will start by posting a photo along with an accompanying title. The next person to post must then put up an image whose title begins with last letter of my title. For...

Adding vignette - when does it become too much?

I frequently add a vignette to my photos. I'm a huge fan of Lomography, and that washed-out old school vintage look. It's kind of amusing to take a photograph from a $1200 camera and make it appear to have come from a cheap film camera from the 80's. I don't use vignettes for portraits only...

    HDR Software

What HDR programs does anyone use? Photomatix seems to be the most popular. I've given the trial version a test drive and it seems to do everything I want it to. They also have a Photoshop plug-in that is a bit cheaper, but it somewhat limited in its tone mapping capabilities.

    Gavyn

This is a cool concept and is well put together. I'm not a portrait guy either, but the lighting looks good to me. I think the cropping could be better. It wouldn't take much to re-size some of these a little bit so that fingers and ears aren't cut off. I also think that in making the large...

    Non-Nikon Brands

I'm curious to know who uses non-proprietary brand flashes with their Nikon cameras? I've had the privilege of working with a pro who swears by a Sunpak 383. The very popular Strobist.com recommends using a LumoPro LP160 for off-camera sync lighting. This particular flash has the power and...
