How to shoot this kind of photo?

Ok, "double-exposure in camera" is. So basically you take two individual shots and then use image overlay in retouch menu to blend. The example below (from slrlounge) shows a very impressive and interesting 2-exp result with the settings: “Silhouette Image”: 24mm, ISO 100, f/5.6, 1/1000 sec...

How to shoot this kind of photo?

I am wondering if it is possible to shoot a photo like one below (from National Geographic) by a regular DSLR camera? What kind of settings are used? I am thinking of maybe long exposure... Appreciate verification and tips.

    Startrails post-processing in Darktable

Needa, I tried some re-processing: 2 more instances of reducing exposure -- until everything is dark; "Color reconstruction" as the article recommends -- with little effect; "Highlight reconstruction" (also mentioned in the article, but not the primary option) -- with "Reconstructing in CL"...

    Startrails post-processing in Darktable

Thanks, Needa. I tried a new exposure instance and a tonemapping. The outcome looks better but the improvement still unsatisfactory. Guess like you said it's gone for now... until next experiment.

    Startrails post-processing in Darktable

Hi, I spent 3 hours in the mid of a chilly night and then mistakenly set iso=800 and 30min to shot a startrails image (extremely over-exposed, see pic1). Then I used darktable to reduce the exposure to make it visible (as in pic2). I just wonder if I can continue with darktable to bring the...

How to lock focus on D3500?

Needa, I tried the parametric mask by changing output/input. It seemed nothing happened... So I just changed the exposure and black level. It seemed working and bringing up more stars: Before: after: And the high iso: before: after (quite more editing):

How to lock focus on D3500?

@Nick, It's ok as long as I find the way (use MF) to shoot night-sky effectively (still learning to master MF with viewfinder especially in night time). BTW, I can still and will use BBF for most other shootings as I find it a great technique to use. So thank you for tipping and teaching me...
