As long you have the day and night images shot in the same composition, you can easily combine the two halves with a layer mask in Gimp.

I use z8 for wildlife photos and z6ii for everything else, including sports during the day. Depending on the site and other conditions, I use either z8 or z6ii for nightscape photos. GL for upgrading.
