I personally don't care for brick walls 98% of the time..They can work be you mentioned bluring them alittle is the way to go..I know these were headshots..pulling subject off of the wall would have truly helped..it is a learning experience..This is the only shot in my Port I used a brick...

Get the D610 and don't look back...The sensor is one of the best...You dont need 36mp for what your looking to do..I took this yesterday with my D610..My daughters pose wasn't the best..It was quite hot yesterday.. This was taken with the Nikkor 24mm-70mm 2.8G(click on pic for better quality)

For 4 lights or more then maybe a meter is a good investment..For 1 or 2 lights it is not needed.. Here are two pics I did...First is with 2 lights and second with 1 light.. One Light...

I think your last shot was the strongest ...The main thing lacking in most of the pics is expression..Definately practice your processing as well..If possible get you a flash to light subjects face versus the harsh sun's highlights..I retouched one creative pic you did and feel it has more...
