    My initial Z5 experiences.

I guess the admins will just have to migrate this thread over after a new Z5 topic is created. Hint, hint! I have been doing a gradual shakedown of the new Z5 I bought. Between work, healing my bad back, and some gloomy weather at times I have not been photographing much. Something I have...

    The Sea & The Light

Ahh, I see now it is kind of a small lighthouse. Guessing you shot from the deck of a cruise ship, and getting a wider shot was not quite possible with the gear. Oh well. But a wider shot is the way to go from what Google Earth shows me. Ground-level view even shows what the ships look like...

    The Sea & The Light

I am guessing something was to the right that ruins composition because of the shadow I see. I wanted to say perhaps crop down to get that 1/3 placement on the lighthouse, but that didn't work so good... But I do like the photo. Wish I had a more personal knowledge of the location to suggest...

Let's try to spend my tax refund.

My boss' dog gets honor of being my first Z5 model. Turns out he is afraid of cameras and will try to hide around a corner. Nobody knew until today. I just had to brighten the exposure some, I left the rest as-is and only cropped to pixel peep with the 3rd photo. Shot in A mode at f/4. I...

Quick question or two about HDR

I have expressed my opinion before that HDR is overused and really only needs to be done with some special circumstances. A scene with waves and potentially moving clouds will bring some fuzziness into the final image, just a matter of how much. I had to go back to 2012 for a time when I...

    Considering a D5 for wildlife

I think most people would steer you to a D850 as the superior wildlife camera in full-frame F-mount, and the D500 as the superior DX F-mount. You have a lot of room to crop with the high-resolution sensor on the D850. Just to give you some reference, I also brought out my Sigma 150-600mm C lens...

    A nice early-afternoon sun.

Some might post their sunrises or sunsets here. Where does a mid-day sun photo fit in all of these categories? ;) I used 150mm glass solar filter over my Sigma 150-600mm C lens. The previews in Live View were not that good, the final photos actually were dimmer and needed to have the exposure...

I inherited some film-era Nikon stuff.

I lost my brother to cancer recently. He had been heavily disabled tied to oxygen use for about 15 years. But before that he was a more active hobby photographer. I believe he was attempting to establish a niche for himself as an erotic photographer for a while to help fund stuff. I at least...

Let's try to spend my tax refund.

Normally I tend to make major camera gear purchases this time of year after filing my taxes and setting a budget based on the refund. This year, I don't have specific anything in mind. I did buy some used lenses during 2021 and a replacement infrared converted D600. I am feeling like I have my...

    Post your latest purchases.

Really, a proper swivel-type monopod head looks like this. Personally I need a third hand to hold a monopod, support the camera, and manipulate a ball-head. You can leave the knob a bit loose and track up-down easily, and rotate the entire monopod to track side-side.

    Considering a Zeiss Distagon 15mm F/2.8 ZF.2 T*

Finally took this lens out for some real photos. I just did some scenery following a morning of harassing eagles with my clicking shutter. I really had to adjust my composition mindset. This will not be a natural thing for a while.

    Moon pictures

Getting back to the original topic here: I had a similar photo-op with the moon tonight. A thin overcast was creating a sort of moon-dog. Except there was depth and texture with the cloud cover. I used my 70-200mm f/2.8 lens to capture the image. I took over 70 photos, split into 3 groups with...

    Considering a Zeiss Distagon 15mm F/2.8 ZF.2 T*

There is a used example at my local camera shop, listed at $850. Zeiss Distagon 15mm F/2.8 ZF.2 T* Would anybody have any experience with the lens to help me decide? I currently have as my widest FX lens a 20mm Sigma f/1.4 Art. Been eyeballing 14mm lenses this year, and considering a...

My photos I selected for 2022 gift calendars.

In a way, this is a way to review my photography in 2021. I do this every year. My Christmas gifts for all family, co-workers, and neighbors are calendars. Desk calendars for co-workers, mini wall calendars for the neighbors, full size glossy wall calendars with birthdays and anniversaries...

    Moon pictures

Apologies to Wakefieldowl, it was not my intention to take over this thread. When I made the images last year, I also confirmed the moons in Stellarium and made alternate images with labels. That is a star in the upper right.
