Terrence Malick - amazing movies for the student of photography

I just watched the latest Terrence Malick movie "The Tree of Life" and once again I was blown away by the most amazing and beautiful images ever put together in one movie. Terrence Malick has one of the most incredible eyes for images, each one of them would be a prized photograph but they come...

D7000's tendency to over expose - I see it now

For nearly a week now I've been using my D7000 while my D800 is visiting its maker and I now see exactly what people were talking about when they claimed the D7000 matrix metering tends to over expose images. I've read such claims ever since I started with the D7000 but I wrote them off as being...

MCAS Miramar Air show - great show but it killed my D800...

It was an awesome show but by the end my D800 kicked the bucket after only 3 1/2 months. But at least I got some great images. It started off with the "Patriots" squad in what I believe are F-14's. And then there was a mix of various airplanes and helicopters...

    Night fountain revisited

I revisited this fountain a little earlier in the evening to get a better moon position relative to the fountain. I think I like this version better than an earlier image. D800; 24-70mm; ISO-800; 1/6 sec

    Moon/sun program

Does anyone know of a program or app that will tell you at what angle the sun and moon will be at any given time on any given day? I'm a big fan of the Photographers Ephemeris but they only give you the direction and not the angle relative to the horizon. TIA

2 night photos - San Diego and Coronado Bridge

These 2 panorama photos of San Diego and Coronado Bridge were taken last night. This was my first attempt at capturing the bridge at night and I'm not too happy with this image. I've got to figure out a way to get more height out of the bridge while keeping the moon in the image. Tonight is the...

    Constrained cropping

Does anyone know how LR or PS can be adjusted to give constrained crops? I realize you can crop by dragging the corner at a 45 degree angle but it's less than perfect. I would like to keep my X/Y axis ratio constant but so far I've not figured out how to do this but I've gotta believe it's...

    Tone Mapping

Can some explain in simple terms exactly what tone mapping is, why you would do it and exactly how you go about doing it. I'm reading this HDR book and it keeps talking about the importance of scaling back from 32 bit to 16 bit but doesn't explain how to do it. TIA

uploading images - can't see the file anylonger

There's been a weird change when you go to upload an image. You, or at least I, can no longer see the files that I upload but when I hit the "upload" button hoping it had grabbed the file, it worked, but instead of seeing the files and their individual sizes, I saw nothing. Has there been a...
