Does the 28-300 compliment the 24-120F4

I currently have the 24-120F4 and it's a great lens. I actually chose it over the 24-70 as it's more versatile for my actual use with the extra range and VR. I'm sure at some point in the future I'll convince myself that I need the 24-70  My current dilemma is that we are planning a...

The D7100 has better resolving power than the D800

Well I thought that would get your attention :) Following some recent discussions regarding the D800s’ amazing resolution and ability to crop a good image from the far distance I thought I would do a test to demonstrate how a DX body would out resolve it in like for like circumstances. I would...

    My daughter's wedding

My daughter got married this weekend and my wife and I were asked to do the photos. No pressure there then  For the first time I loaded both memory slots on the D800 and configured the primary for RAW and the backup for fine/medium JPG (Still 20MP !!) just in case my card went down. Luck...

Got fed up waiting for the D400

My wife has been hanging on with her D300, but today we decided enough was enough and got the 7100. It should be interesting to say how it compares. Primary reasons for the upgrade / re-grade is better ISO performance and some more resolution / cropability.

    Models be warned!!

These two said that my pictures were not up to scratch (In fairness they were probably right) :) OK I've actually been practicing lighting setups and these two are really handy.

    DPI settings

I spent some time trying to get my head around DPI settings and concluded that it is only relevant to printers. For example, if you have a jpg that is 1000 pixels wide, a screen will display it using 1000 pixels on the wide side. I don't believe DPI is considered. I have messed around exporting...

Finally got the home studio finished

We now have our home studio ready to play with. The dimensions make it just big enough to get a full length portrait in at 85mm which I'm happy about as I didn't want to go much wider to achieve it. Head and shoulders is not an issue. Our mobile bench (The unit with drawers in) arrived today as...

    Home studio

I am in the process of making my home studio in a spare bedroom. The room is about 3.6m x 3.6m with standard height ceilings (only about 8 foot). The thing that's bugging me is what colour to paint it as it's not a huge space for a studio, therefore be more difficult to control/kill light. The...

    AF Fine tune.

I was just bored so I wandered over to Mr Rockwells site for some light reading. Immediately I ended up angry. The first article on the page was entitled "AF fine tune?". Having spent a lot of time trying to get my lenses dialled ( all Nikon) I was flabbergasted that he said it was a waste of...

    Macro on DX or FX

I'm normally OK at this sort of thing but my brain isn't working today so here goes. My wife has a 90mm macro that she use on her D300. If she fills the frame with whatever she is shooting it will be a 12mp image with associated resolution. If I put this DX lens on my D800 or a D7000 for that...

Off camera flash. Pocket Wizard and Sekonic 478

Last year I decided I wanted to learn a bit more about using a flash properly so I purchased an SB900. I bought some books and improved my knowledge including using my friend's Sekonic meters. I'm quite lucky as he sells them so I've tried the whole range from 758 down. I also started to play...

    28-300 and/or 24-120

I have the 24-120 F4 currently and I'm pleased with it. I may buy the 28-300 sometime over the next 12 months for a travel lens. My question is, would I find myself taking the 28-300 off the camera very often and replacing it with the 24-120 because the image quality is that much better? I used...

    D800 back from Nikon

I recently sent the D800 in to Nikon because I could not AF fine tune my 70-200 / TC-20e combo as it was too far out of range. I got the body back today, although the lens and TC are following (long story). Apparently they have adjusted both the body and the lens combo. I now need to fine tune...

    Using the D300s again

I recently went FX with the D600 then D800. I originally planned to sell the 300s but couldn't bring myself to do it as I'd only bought it 18 months ago. I initially worried about it just sitting in my bag as a second body and never seeing the light of day, not a fitting way for a camera of...

Finally pulled the trigger - no pun intended

We recently got a second SB900 and today I received a Sekonic 478DR and a Pocket wizard mini with two flex units. We also have a couple of proline heads for our daughters bedroom which becomes a studio when she moves out next month :-) I spent a long time deciding which meter to get and whether...

    Nikon 70-200 VRII + TC-20e III

I've just gone to FX and decided that the 70-200 was not quite long enough for some of my requirements, so I decided to get the TC-20e III to double the focal length. I've put some images taken with the 70-200 VRII + TC-20e III @ around 400mm here. I'd be interested to know what people think...

    Life without the Nikon 18-200

Just before Christmas I moved from DX to FX. This meant a review of my lenses. I ended up with the 24-120 as my general purpose lens and sold the 18-200 to support its purchase. I have been a fan of the 18-200 for years and thought I would miss the range, but surprisingly I haven't. In FX terms...

Who uses a handheld exposure meter for landscape

I'm currently trying to decide if it's worth paying about £400 for a Sekonic 758 to use when taking landscapes. I'm absolutely sold on meters for studio and flash photography, but need to try it in anger on landscape. I wouldn't need something as high end for non landscape as I wouldn't need the...

    The conversion is complete!!

Today I got the last two parts of my DX to FX conversion, the 16-35 F4 and the TC-20E III. The transition went something like this: 1. Replace D300s with D800 (Can't bring myslef to sell the D300s so that part of the business case is still in tatters). 2. Replace 35 1.8 with 50 1.8g 3. Tokina...

Not sure about my new D800

As previously posted I replaced my D600 with a D800 after about a month. I shot the D600 like my D300s and was rewarded with very nice images in terms of colour, crispness and the high ISO noise handling. I was not looking for anything better in these respects from the D800 (I just prefer the...
