Where do you meter when shooting sunsets?

Sun is going down in a few. Hope to go shoot. Just want to know your preference. If you need your on the sun wouldn't that under expose everything else? Conversely if you meter on everything else wouldn't that over expose the sun? Thanks!

    Man...Just bit the bullet..

And bought myself a 16-85vrii. :eek-new: I've been eying this and the 11-16 Tokina for a long while now. (I also picked up a new bag, the Lowepro Passport Sling which I hope will let me access my gear a little easier while on the go.) I'd been seeing the price of the 16-85 creep up and up on...

    What the duece?

So I sent some pictures to Costco electronically on their website. I sent them a 78.4MB file in TIF format. (yep, they do print those.)I got the print back and it looks ok. But, it also shows this, which is interesting, right on the summary portion. It says 5MB. Do they severely downsample the...

    Does your shutter ...

Does your shutter sound the same speed at 1/1000 as 1/4000? Mine does. Is that weird? Is it weird I even pay attention to that? More testing on my end is certainly needed but I was wondering if anyone else was crazy enough to notice this happening to them.

planned out my next lens bag

I like traveling light. Body, 2 lenses, one attached is ideal. Maybe a light low-light prime mixed in there.. I shoot architecture sometimes for profit and random business and goings on around town/forests, on hikes and such. So here's what I came up with. -5 Million Dollar Home (or whichever...

New camera time, what to do...

Ooook, so I have a D5100 and feel I've outgrown it already. I should have bought the 7000 when I had the chance, but alas, I didn't and now regret it. So now, I'm ready for another upgrade in fall or possibly sooner. I'm waiting for the new lineup to release but still am on the fence about DX...

Picture threads and 365 galleries slow to browse

It seems as if scrolling on these types of pages is like trying to swim through a pool of molasses. Any reason for this or is it just the amount of graphics displayed on the page? Any other site/page on this site works well though.. I've also never had this issue with any other site with a ton...

Need advice on an ND filter real quickly..

So I'm going to see Falling Water in early July and there are countless waterfalls there. I'm obviously bringing my camera and was interested in getting some seriously cool looking "spiderweb" waterfalls. (you know how when you LE, water can look like a thick spider web?) So, there are tons of...

Multipoint selectable focal points. 5100 doesn't have it..

Which is lame. I wish it did. As I progress, I keep wanting things out of my body that it simply can't provide. I could just kick myself for not buying the very best body I could afford. I really am starting to need things like this and it's almost painful to admit to myself that I need to...

Logged in time-out should really be longer.

Seriously, I don't know why it's so short. I can leave my desk and come back after using the john and i'm already logged out. What's the default time limit? Can this be changed? Thanks!

    Glassy, saturated looking photos

I've been looking a Flickr photos and a lot of these shots are super liquidy and fluid, almost glassy looking. Is this a function of lenses or is it some post trickery at work? Is it Flickr itself imparting it's own magic on the photos? Either way, I want. None of my photos really exhibit this...

What would you charge for this pic?

So my cousin works at a Bereavement Coordinator at a hospice company and wants to purchase several photos from me. She is looking for Clouds, flowers and sunsets, obviously to elevate mood. Now, she is interested in something like this, not necissarily this particular shot. But I'm at the point...

Help, seems my shutter is broken?

So I'm shooting last night and my camera is set to bracket 3 shots. It only took 2. Eventually it took 3, but I couldn't figure out what happened. I didn't change any settings to make it do that. Fast forward to today. Shooting in bright light. The camera shutter seems to take about 1 second to...

Rant on manual exposure and why I don't believe it. Well, in most cases..

Ok, so I was thinking today. I know, something I shouldn't do too much. It was that time of the week where ideas sprout up be they good or terrible. Let's look at a properly exposed image. Let's say the image was shot on aperture priority mode. Let's also assume that the shooter ONLY cares...

    So, 24mpx sensors..will we complain?

So now that we have 24mxp sensors, will we be complaining for awhile, then suddenly realize that 24mpx isn't all that bad? It seems like we were just saying, "1TB hard drives? We don't need that much capacity!!" I kind of feel like this will be the same way. I plan on picking up one of the new...

Interesting RAW vs. JPG comparison I shot

Ok, so in an effort to finally solve once and for all the mysteries between RAW and JPG quality (FOR ME, READ... FOR MY OWN SAKE) I shot two pictures of the same thing. Blew it up 100% and added absolutely no post processing. Here's what I shot at F2.0, ISO 3200, 1/15. RAW: JPG NORMAL...

    Eurotrash's Euro52 Gallerie

    50mm lens. Equivelant or actual?

So, when people say "A 50 is a staple. Go get one.", are they referring to a 35mm equivalent (~35mm) or a 50mm lens (equivalent to ~75)? I'm assuming it's whatever gets you closer to an equivalent focal length. I have BOTH of these lenses and am just wondering what the general consensus is on...
