After a long (too long!) break I got out and took some pictures eventually. Similar to Mike's: birds on a frozen lake.

Is this "banding" you have in mind? I just loaded your image into Photoshop and saved it as JPEG with lowest possible quality. This dramatically exaggerated the compression artefacts.
