    David_W's Images (Project 365)

Scripts Pier, La Jolla, CA Interestingly, I didn't enhance that pattern in the sand, this is pretty much the way I found it. I did use a red filter to bring out the sky which may have popped some of the contrast of the sand but for the most part, that's the way it looked. 14-24mm; f-8; ISO-100

Does anyone own a Manfrotto 055XPROB tripod?

I've been meaning to upgrade my current old 3001 Manfrotto tripod for one that stands a bit higher with the center post down and I've narrowed it down to the 055X series. So I was wondering if anyone else has this tripod and if so would they buy it again? TIA

    South Bay Power Plant Implosion

This morning the city of San Diego brought down the South Bay Power plant to make way for a park in the lower bay estuaries. Although the shots of the power plant coming down are okay the thing that I found most fascinating was the power of the explosions. The shock wave coming off these...

Although the sunset got clogged up with the marine layer, I did find a new cool spot to sunset hunt. 14-24mm; ISO-100; f-8 (total 7 images. Loving my new Photomatix toy, btw)

Photoshop HDR Pro vs. HDR Efex vs Photomatix

I've spent most of the day playing around with Photomatix and it's forced me to revisit both Photoshop and HDR Efex. So I took a random set of 5 bracketed images and loaded them into each program. I tried to optimize each image as best I could within the corresponding program. Here is my...

Reducing photos for uploading - what's the best way?

Okay, here's a couple tests, the first is only 99k @ 100 ppi and the second on is 660k @ 100ppi. Which do you think looks better? Is the 660k too large or the 99k too small? (ie - papa bear vs. baby bear and I need to find mama bear?) [btw - these are from later in the evening as the sky...

Reducing photos for uploading - what's the best way?

I was doing a little reading last night about sharpening/noise reduction and the author pointed out something I hadn't been taking into consideration - When you resize your images, all your sharpening and noise reduction goes out the window. And the more I understand the process of sharpening...

How about posting your HDR images?

I went back to the tide pools in La Jolla for the sunset. There were some pretty good high clouds this afternoon which make for great pink skies just after the sun goes below the horizon. Here's another example, I'm still getting used to Photomatix, so it's not yet optimized. I'm stoked that...

A developing niche market for an enterprising wedding photographer

Reading this article HERE it occurs to me that same-sex marriages could be a very lucrative market to specialize in. To begin with, the market is wide open and more and more states in the US are finding same-sex marriages legal, so the demand will only increase with time. And judging from some...

How about posting your HDR images?

Here's an HDR I made today putzing around at the shores. I'm still not quite getting the whole HDR thing. For instance, after you send your images to Photoshop and the window with gamma and radius adjustments come up, I'm assuming this is the infamous "tone mapping", right? If so, what the heck...

    Protecting your images from theft

Here's an article with some common sense steps to protecting your images from theft. Nothing earth shattering but nice info to know. Interestingly, the author didn't mention that in the US you automatically own the copyright to your work regardless whether you post it on your image or not...

Nikon Image Space has gone live (but still in Japanese)

Nikon Image Space is currently up and running but not yet in English. I'm thinking it's Jan 29th in Japan and will be in English in another 13 hrs PDT. But you can still sign up and upload photos. The nice thing about using Chrome is that you can automatically translate the pages into English...

4 TB Seagate external on sale

Just a quick FYI - Starting Jan 31, CostCo is selling the 4TB Seagate "Back-Up Plus" external HD for $159. Although I'm sure the price of storage space will continue to go lower as places like Mega give away larger amounts of cloud space, this is a pretty good price if you need storage now.

Easy Focus Stacking Technique Using Photoshop for Maximum Depth of Field.

Focus stacking is a very easy way to produce an image with the maximum depth of field and doesn't require anything more than a copy of Photoshop. First you need to set your camera up on a tripod and turn off auto-focus (and VR, if you have it). Now using the manual focus, bring the closest...
