I have been looking for one of these for a long time...............

And finally found a Minolta Color Meter IIIF for a good price. This one is in mint condition and they are rare and usually command a pretty high price ($450-$500) but I think the seller did not do their research before he listed it! I got this one for about $330. They only read color...

My first, and still favorite, Nikon. Circa 1969, it still works flawlessly (except the meter) after 51 years.

Let there be light........and plenty of it!

There are times when the tide is low at one of my favorite shore bird haunts and it coincides with sun being at my face rather than at my back. I started using a hotshoe mounted flash to fill in the shadows and put a catchlight in the bird's eye but using the "Beast" to photograph birds often...

Two red paper wasps building a nest

New home construction is everywhere! These two paper wasps are building a small nest on the top door jamb of our front door. I used the D850 and my 55mm f/2.8 AIS Micro Nikkor focused to 1:2 and added some fill flash with a ring flash. I taped a piece of white copy paper on the door and closed...

My house may be haunted, or worse yet, a portal to the underworld............

Ok, this is just plain CREEPY. I euthanized a giant (almost 3" from leg tip to leg tip) Golden Silk Orb Weaver spider with ethyl acetate two days ago. Within 5 minutes she rolled over and stopped moving. But because she was so much bigger than any spider I have euthanized and photographed in the...

Man have my prayers been answered!

Don't get me wrong, I love my 600mm f/4 but to be brutally honest, it is a BEAST of a lens at 14 pounds. Add the D850 or D500 with the grip, gimbal head and tripod (even though it is carbon fiber) and the rig tips the scales at around 25 pounds. Carrying it over the shoulder for any distance is...

    Weekly Challenge June 24 - 30: Water

This image was taken with my new SplashArt water droplet rig. There is a solenoid in the rig that times the interval between the dispense of 2 water droplets and the delay before it trips the shutter (and therefore the flash). Setting it up and tweaking it was a bit of a pain but when you...

    Sheetweaver Spider and Egg Cases

This spider and her egg case was out in the garage. I placed a potted plant behind it to give a more interesting background than just bare concrete and lit it with a strobe overhead and bounced in an umbrella. D850 and 105mm f/2.8 AIS Micro Nikkor

    Green Lacewing Egg Stalks

I was in the backyard yesterday doing a little cleanup when I spotted something under the deck. I picked it up and noticed the symmetry of the little filaments. It turned out to be about 15 eggs laid by a Green Lacewing on a dead pine needle. It looks like one has already hatched (the second...

    Buttercup Flower with Dew

I went outside this morning around 7am and to my surprise and delight, all of the Buttercup flowers which were withered yesterday afternoon had straightened out all of their petals and were covered with dew. I grabbed the D850 and 200mm f/4 IF AIS Nikkor and re-shot this one. It is 50 images...

I got a new lens the other day

Another image I took with this 200mm Micro Nikkor. I am really liking this lens! The working distance was about 2 1/2 feet on this wilting Buttercup flower. 20 images focus stacked

    wev's 366 in 2020

Outstanding! The D500 does quite well for itself at ISO 4000. I have run mine up that high a few times and been very happy with the results. I am astounded at how well my D850 does at ISO 4000. The only noise you can see is in the out of focus areas.

I got a new lens the other day

Well it is not new, it is probably 20 years old but that is young in AIS Nikkor years. Some of my Nikkors date to the 70's and they are still going strong. I have been contemplating getting another macro lens for a while. The 55mm f/2.8 AIS Micro Nikkor is a superb macro lens but is no good for...

    To Gimball or Not ?

If you want to be able to easily and smoothly use a long lens like a 500mm then a gimbal head is the only way to go. Trust me, your lens is a "lightweight", my 600mm f/4 ED IF AIS Nikkor is 14 pounds all by itself. I don't nickname it "the beast" for nothing! Add the D850 and battery grip and...

To take a line from the Wizard of Oz, "Well bust my buttons!"

Sitting around, not having anything to do I decided I would do a head to head comparison of the 50mm f/1.8 AIS Nikkor (a lens that I always considered extraordinarily sharp) and the 50mm f/2 Nikkor H I got with my first Nikon, a black FTN, back in 1973. The 50mm f/1.8 AIS Nikkor has been...

    Female Golden Huntsman Spider

I shot this interesting spider in a light tent with the D850 and 50mm f/1.8 AIS Nikkor mounted on the PB-6 bellows. She is quite a striking spider and that is quite a set of labidognath chelicerae and fangs she has there! Given that she is a fairly large spider, that would be a bite that would...
