Dont want to throw a spanner in the works but the distances you are talking about need shortening, good bird images are taken most of the time over short distances There is a lot of crap in the atmosphere and the more air between you and your subject means more condensed air pollutants to soften...

Nice capture,I think would lift the shadows slightly. between 10-20% for a bit more pop and then a light touch on clarity.

It would be interesting to know your settings and are you shooting raw or jpeg,just had a look on my computer and there is not a lot wrong with your shot,just did a very slight re edit on it.you will need to click it to enlarge i cant do a quote and enlarge the image.

@Friggs If your losing the Exif on transfer from flickr it could be the size you are transferring and the forum is stripping it when it downsizes, i uploaded this one at 1500 on the long side, will upload it at 1500 and 1024 to see if it keeps its Exif on both 1500 P1090158 by electric.mike...
