If the first shot were mine, I'd square crop it. This tightens up the shot, allows for some breathing room and keeps the subject looking "in frame". I also think a tiny bit of exposure adjustment brought out the contrast and added a little "pop". Here I dropped the exposure by a quarter stop but...

I've run into the disappearing thumbnail issue myself. Try purging the thumbnail cache using the built-in Windows "Disk Cleanup" utility: Press the Windows+R keys to open the Run dialog box, type cleanmgr in the text-box and press Enter.

This one needs a little work but I kinda like it... ....
