    A nice early-afternoon sun.

It is, after all, a well lit subject.

Good job. I would recommend bracketing the shot. Since you are set up on a tripod and the subject won't be flying away, why not just put your Z5 in auto bracket and take a series. You might find that a different setting gives you different results. I would even try an HDR merge to see what happens.

    Old Family Photos

Here's me and my dad. He's the one wearing glasses. My wife has some great pictures from the 19th century. Unfortunately, I don't have access to them right now.

    Kodachrome turns 50

What a neat old photo to have. If it weren't for the cars, you could believe it was taken last year. It's amazing how well Kodachrome holds up over the years. I frequently underexposed Kodachrome by around a 1/2 a stop to get a little more saturation. I remember one of the few, if only contests...

    HSN and Z lenses

I've noticed that almost everyone has the same price on Nikon lenses these days. If the Nikon Store puts a lens on sale, so does everyone else, and at the same price. I was a little surprised that HSN had the 24-70 F4 at less than Nikon. I wonder if that is actually a refurb. That would put...

    Kodachrome turns 50

That's why I started the thread off with "The song, not the film.", but it has turned into a thread about the film. Actually looking over posts, it looks like I was the one that made the left turn to the film.

    HSN and Z lenses

Looking at a few lenses, they are higher than Nikon Store's new prices. The 105mm micro for F mount is $1350 from HSN. It is no longer available new from Nikon, but I bought a refurb from the Nikon Store last year for $600. The Z 24-70 F4 is a couple hundred less on HSN. I suppose it might be...

    Such a lot to learn?

Welcome. Yes, there is a lot to learn. I was into film photography back in the day. I moved on to other hobbies before digital hit the scene. Got back into it a couple years ago when my daughter caught the bug. The features available in even an "entry" level digital camera is staggering. I...

    What about Topaz mask?

    Good to know. Thanks Fred

    What about Topaz mask?

I've been quite happy with the Topaz bundle so far. Now I'm wondering if Topaz Mask AI is worth looking into. I watched a few videos on Youtube and it looks like it might be a nice tool. I have become comfortable with masking in LR, although at times it won't allow me to do what I want. I have...

And sometimes the bear eats you

I appreciate the kind words from all. However, I am under no illusion that it represents great photography. I have seen some stunning work done in this genre. That doesn't mean I'm not proud of this and a few other examples of my work, but I'm realistic about the quality of my work. Bottom line...

And sometimes the bear eats you

Gnats aside, this is a difficult location to get an image you want, despite being a very impressive landscape. One issue is the extreme dynamic range between the sky and the backlit trees. That can be dealt with in most images with post processing. The biggest problem is that many views are just...

And sometimes the bear eats you

Well, the second one I posted was a salvage operation. I must have bumped the camera during the exposure, as it was a little soft. I ran it through Topaz Sharpen, which took care of the softness, but introduced some artifacts in the surf. You can probably only see them at higher magnification...

    Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 - Which CPL filter?

Beware of no name Amazon filters. Some of them have plastic elements and will severely degrade image quality. I was given a set of Altura filters for my 200-500. I tried the UV and noticed my images were very soft with the filter on. I looked closely at them and they obviously use plastic for...

    Street photography

Here's another one from the same day as above. I was intrigued with the look of it on the street, but not quite sure how well it actually works. I do like the repeating forms, but they don't all line up, and there are minor differences, even though they are all the same model bicycle, which is a...

    Woody's Vea La Luz 2023

Well, from what I read when looking for some info on this entry, it isn't always a terribly accurate number. You might try looking at the details in properties and see if this data correlates with known focus distances.

    Woody's Vea La Luz 2023

It doesn't show up in yours, Blackstar. It doesn't show up in mine either. I'm not sure why. I have the focus area turned on in playback in my camera. I'm using xlfr as an add on to Firefox. I checked properties on a recent file of mine using file explorer, and the focus distance is listed, but...
