    Clovis' Nikon Nuggets

Well, this one is a little better. Ironically, I got one fly shot this morning. This was it. I assumed it would be out of focus, as the wind was rocking the plant back and forth, and after one shot, a sweat bee came up and scared the fly off. Discovered an ambush bug dining on a sweat bee. I...

    Clovis' Nikon Nuggets

Some different plants are starting to bloom. I've been wondering how this plant was going to look after blooming, and what insects it would attract. Since some of the insects that are starting to be attracted to this are very small, I put my extension tubes on my 105 macro. I'm having a little...

Closeups with D3400 - having great difficulty !!

The 18-55 was a "kit" lens that was offered with the D3400 and other crop sensor cameras. It was often paired with a 70-300. I purchased a D3400 for my daughter several years ago. It came with both of these lenses, plus a camera bag and memory card, and the kit was on sale, new, for $500. It...

Closeups with D3400 - having great difficulty !!

First off, and this is not a criticism, neither of these two images are what I would call closeups. Both pictures have a lot of elements that are in focus. Even with the distance from the subject, and using a wide angle focal length, you are unable to get everything front to back in focus with...

Closeups with D3400 - having great difficulty !!

You will also have to hit the down button on the "joystick" pad that surrounds the "OK" button, when you are in playback mode to get the info to come up. I don't see PPT under supported file types in the file upload popup.

    Easy one for me.

Closeups with D3400 - having great difficulty !!

I didn't measure, but perhaps a little under 1 ft. Nikon says .9 ft min focus distance. Of course that is from the focal plane, so distance from the front of the lens is less. If you want to maximize your magnification, put it on 55mm. If you are using AF, half press the shutter and wait for the...

    Woody's 2024 Photon Collection Project

Great shots. Unfortunately, (no fault of your photography) the images don't convey the size of these guys. They are really small. Even with something like a hand in the shot to give scale, pictures don't just have the small impact of seeing one with the naked eye. Our local raptor rescue center...

Closeups with D3400 - having great difficulty !!

I would recommend trying the extension tubes first. The kit lens you have isn't the best candidate for use with extension tubes, but it will do the job. By going the tube route, you will have minimal money invested, to explore macro photography. With some experience under your belt, you will...

Closeups with D3400 - having great difficulty !!

Macro photography has it's challenges, but it's not rocket science. The closeup mode they refer to only manages the exposure. That can be important, but focus is also critical. Personally, I would recommend either full manual, or aperture preferred. This will allow you to choose the aperture you...

Need a quick opinion on a small tripod

Well, the tripod arrived yesterday. We unpacked it and set it up. It's a little heavier than I thought it would be in comparison to the flimsy little Manfrotto it's replacing. I believe it's less than a pound difference, but weighs in at 3.6 lbs. This is not going to be the chore to carry...

    Lens compatibility

My daughter has one for her D5600. It seems to be a decent lens from the images I have seen her take with it. I tried it out on my old D3400 and it worked just fine.

Need a quick opinion on a small tripod

Well, we need to leave for our monthly nature photography meeting, so I went ahead and ordered the aluminum. The Pup said she didn't really think the CF was enough of an upgrade to justify spending extra. Everything else seems to be the same on these models, except the material for the legs.

Need a quick opinion on a small tripod

Well, I've pretty much decided this is the tripod to get her, I just need to decide between the aluminum version or the CF version. I'm leaning toward the CF.

Need a quick opinion on a small tripod

I have a larger Benro in aluminum. I really like it, and that lead me to look closely at this one.

Need a quick opinion on a small tripod

I need to replace the Pup's travel tripod. Her old one gave up the ghost, more from being hauled around than actually used. As intimated, she doesn't use one often, but when she needs one.......... I happened to see that B&H has a big sale on right now, and goes off later today. I found a small...

First fruits of my wildflower "field".

Experimenting with a new, to me, style of flash diffuser. I made one of the sconce style out of thin cardboard duct tape and an old T-shirt. I took a handful of shots this evening, and I think I like it better than the little pop up, clip on the lens style, or the small soft box style, both of...

    Name that bug!

OK, perhaps I posted this one too soon. It's an ambush bug. I will leave the thread for others to post critters they are having issues identifying.
