    Woody's Hermosa Luz 2025

In the first one Chip, or is it Dale(?), looks like he's coming off a 3 day bender.

Shallow depth of field due to me being 6 ft away, using a 500mm focal length, and near max aperture.

What about copperheads? I shot one today.

    Woody's Hermosa Luz 2025

Woody, you're killing me with these hummingbird pictures. If I start getting too cocky giving my presentation tomorrow night, I can just think of your hummingbird pictures. That'll bring me down to earth. Quickly!

    Large(ish) prints

Funny, I've always thought that screen images were usually better. Backlit vs reflective. Perhaps my printing skills just aren't up to snuff. I have had a few images that I prefer the print version. Regardless of what you think looks better, it's nice to have a good image up on the wall. A...

2025 World Photography Day – Post your favorite image

It's been posted before, but I guess this is one of my favorites, I have a family photo or two that mean more to me personally, but this is my favorite outside of that.

    Large(ish) prints

I made the mistake of volunteering to give a talk at our CNPA meeting this month when the scheduled speaker had to cancel at the last minute. I will be talking about what I learned taking hummingbird pictures this last few weeks. I got the bright idea of printing one of the high ISO images at...

    Tripods? Travel?

Are you looking for a small, light travel tripod, or a larger, heavier more sturdy model? I see travel in the title, but nothing in the text. In general, middle of the road is the best course. Don't go too cheap, and don't spend a bundle on a big name.

    Clovis' Nikon Nuggets

Another trip to Cypress for the hummingbirds. I had full sun today, however, There were unpredictable areas of shade and partial shade, and shaded subject with full sun background etc. Made for some real challenges in shooting and editing. I think the best situation there is light overcast. I...

    What to replace these please?

In general, image quality goes down when the zoom ratio increases. Of course a lot depends on the quality of the lens. I will say that, in general, the Z mount lenses are better optically than the F mount lenses. Some of that is due to progress in the design and manufacturing process of lenses...

    Clovis' Nikon Nuggets

Walked out in the backyard after the rain stopped today. Nice soft light. Thought I'd try my hand at some available light macro shots. Lots of throw aways due to motion blur. I was shooting handheld, and trying to keep the ISOs down. Shot around 180th of a sec for most. of them. Even at F/11...

Another session at Cypress Gardens today. Managed to get in a few shots before the rain set in. Lots of squabbles at and around the feeders.

OK, Woody, against my better judgement, here are some of yesterday's shots.

He must have been scared of my Nikon!

Well, I now have proof that a Nikon full frame, high resolution camera will inspire fear and awe in the local wildlife.

    What to replace these please?

Well, if you are happy with the 24-70 F2.8, then the obvious answer would be the Z 24-70 F2.8. I have the 24-70 F4, and it's a great lens. It's very sharp, very fast AF and well built. The F 2.8 version should have and edge in AF because of the larger max aperture, and is reputed to be a little...

    Starting all over??

What were you using before? I've had the Z8 for several months now, and really love it. It is especially good for wildlife. My previous camera, which I still have, was a 7ii. It's a great camera, and if I weren't into wildlife, I think I would be happy with it. It works extremely well for macro...

Well, I was going to post a handful of hummingbird images I took this morning. I fired up this thread and now there's no point! Great stuff!

    Here I am again

And just for comparison, here is another image from the same session when the light was brighter. The clouds thinned a bit for a while, and I was using a lower SS. This one was shot at ISO 2500 and 1/3000 sec. And yes, he's sticking his tongue out at me. I'm beginning to think that some of the...
