    I'm not a morning person

Well, I really enjoyed the outing. Really glad I had a glove in my jacket pocket. My shooting hand got numb even with the glove on. I'm not sure I got any really good shots, although I got a bunch of decent ones. There were a pair of eagles there, I got some long shots. I also got a couple of...

    I'm not a morning person

Decided to take advantage of the expanded hours for members they run twice a month at Magnolia Plantation and Gardens this morning. It's just after 5:30 in the morning and I have worked the evening shift most of my life, so this isn't what I'm used to doing this time of day. Anyway, I'll take a...

    Raw photo viewer

Windows Photo Viewer on my Windows 10 machine will display NEF files, I seem to remember that it also worked on my Windows 11 system. You may need to download a codec for it.

    ML Z + long lens + gimbal

OK, the Pup and I went by Magnolia Plantation and Gardens today. We got our annual membership cards. This will entitle us to go on their early opening days. They have one Monday, and I'm going to try and make it. They open at 7:00 which is about 20 minutes before actual sunrise. I was surprised...

    ML Z + long lens + gimbal

Well, the Pup and I were going to go to Magnolia Plantation and Gardens today. She bailed, so I went back to Cypress Gardens. I got a few long distance pics of the wood ducks. You have to be extremely careful not to spook them. I was trying to sneak up on an opening in the brush to get some...

    ML Z + long lens + gimbal

Well, Blackstar, my experience has been that I do better with the single point focus area, and single. If I'm dealing with moving items, I switch to auto. I don't like auto for most situations, because it will often grab the wrong point to focus. The down side to single point, is that I...

    I'm OK with that.

It's the 200-500 F5.6 Nikon with an FTZ adapter to the Z5. I had it in AF-S single point. That's what I use for most of my shooting, unless it's a fast moving item or animal.

For those that didn't see the post I made in Blackstar's thread, I made my first outing with the gimbal head this morning. I was very happy with it's performance, and managed to get a few OK pictures. I will likely try going back to this park and work on my technique and learn the patterns of...

    ML Z + long lens + gimbal

Well, got back a bit ago from my first outing with the gimbal. In two words, I love it! As to carrying, I did as planned and carried it with the gimbal locked, tripod legs extended, over my shoulder. Tried it without locking and didn't have any issues, but felt more confident with it locked...

    ML Z + long lens + gimbal

I look forward to seeing the info from this thread. I just got a gimbal mount for Christmas. Haven't done much more than shoot a few birds in the backyard with it. I really liked the feel of it from this limited experience. The Pup and I were going to go to the Birds of Prey Center yesterday to...

Nice. Being able to catch eagles in the wild going about their normal activity, and be close enough to photograph them is no easy task. To actually get good photos of it is even harder.

On most forums, the saying is, "no pictures, didn't happen". Somehow that seems inappropriate here. I suppose I'm saying, hey we'd like to see some pictures from this. I know I would be interested in seeing them.

Well, I went ahead and pulled the pan assembly apart. That was some nasty grease they put in there. Thick and sticky. I had trouble getting it off my hands. I used some axle grease, the only thing I had on hand. It moves more freely now. The Pup and I are planning on a trip to the Birds of Prey...

    Dangerous Spouse Pics

I've had the 200-500 for a good bit of the year. As I have said before, it never ceases to impress me. This is one of my favorite lenses ever.

Post your favorite shot of 2022

2022 has been a mixed bag for photography for me. My interest in the last year or so has re-blossomed after several decades of pursuing other interests. I've learned a lot about the digital end of photography and post processing. I've also learned a new way of looking at things to photograph...

    Looking at a Sigma 150/600

I have no experience with the Sigma. The only thing I can offer is I have had the Nikon 200-500 F5.6 since earlier this year. It never ceases to impress me. Normal price is a bit steeper at around $1400, but they have put it on sale for $1050 several times this year. I just checked and it's on...
