I've found this camera/lens combo struggles with sharpness when the subject is in low light. If I didn't have the TC, it wouldn't be a problem. It was extremely shaded where the deer stood - much darker than the image appears.

Question for you @BackdoorArts - Jake, you mentioned not using any sharpening or noise reduction in Lightroom. So do you reset the default sharpening and noise reduction to zero?

I don't think that lens would need a tripod collar. I have the 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 VR AF-S which weighs at least 6 ounces heavier, and I never felt the need to use a tripod collar with it. Nikon doesn't even make one for that lens - and that's one way to tell whether or not you might want to...

Not necessarily. A lot of it depends on the brightness of your scene. Here is one shot at 1/1600" with ISO 500 although it is a different body. Are you taking a lot of your images in low light?
