    Practising with my new d5300

I don't do portraits anymore. I used to back in the film days, so take this for what it's worth. Good points: It is nicely lit, with soft light. The background is out of focus, which is a good thing with portraits. It looks very natural. The not so good points. I assume you took this...

The wood ducks were very cooperative. For wood ducks, anyway. Wish the light had been better.

Sitting here waiting for my new camera to arrive.

Actually, the eye is sharp. For some reason a lot of grasshopper eyes don't look sharp, no matter the focus. And, I didn't use autofocus for any of my macro shots, this one included. Take that, you Youtube naysayers. ;) I downloaded, and installed the latest firmware yesterday. I do need to...

Sitting here waiting for my new camera to arrive.

Made it out to Magnolia this morning. Managed to get some shooting in before the rain set in. Light levels were pretty low early on. Had some issues with the new AF settings. Nothing I don't think I can't work out. Overall, I'm very happy with it, so far. Will probably have to make some computer...

Sitting here waiting for my new camera to arrive.

I'm used to looking at the backscreen, or viewfinder for exposure info, so that doesn't excite me much right now. I may feel differently after using it a while. The thing I'm excited about right now is the extra resolution. It may not be as impressive as first impressions dictate, but I think...

Sitting here waiting for my new camera to arrive.

Well, it arrived a little while ago. Doesn't really look much different than my Z5, but I knew that. Put my spare battery in it, and the new one on to cook. Made a few setups and went out and shot a couple macro shots in the front yard. Not really the best of subjects, but I wanted to put it...

Sitting here waiting for my new camera to arrive.

I know. I really hated spending $2K on another camera. I thought I might use it with an SD card for a while, since the CFexpress cards are around $100, and often more. In the end I decided, I have the money so there is no need to go without something I will be getting anyway, and during that...

Sitting here waiting for my new camera to arrive.

No, but it's supposed to be on the truck. At least I know it's in town. That was one bonus. I knew I could use my Z5 backup battery as the backup for the Z7ii. I'm also starting to think about transferring images from the camera. I've been just pulling the SD from my Z5 and plugging it into my...

Sitting here waiting for my new camera to arrive.

Well, it was supposed to have left Charlotte at 2:15 this morning. Now they have it arriving at Charlotte at 7:00 tonight, and to be delivered tomorrow between noon and 4. Looks like another day of hanging around the house.

Sitting here waiting for my new camera to arrive.

I ordered the Z7ii a couple days ago, and it's supposed to arrive today. I say, supposed to, the tracking says it is going to be delivered today, but It's nearly 3:00 and it still isn't listed as out for delivery. I wouldn't mind it so much, except I have to sign for it, and don't particularly...

    Newbie question

I agree with Needa. Use the camera and lenses you have for a while and learn what niche you really are interested in. That will lead you to what lenses you will need. As she hinted, there is a danger of buying lenses for the crop sensor DSLR you have now, and then you find that you want to move...

April Monthly Assignment: "April showers bring WATER" *** Top Five ***

This was an easy challenge for me, as most photo trips in my area involve water in one form or another.

Subject is too dark. Used Nikon D3200

Well, if it works fine in aperture preferred, or shutter preferred, that wouldn't be too bad IMO. Have you tried any of the icon modes, like the mountain icon for landscapes? It will let you set the ISO in these modes, and that might take care of the problem. Or it might not. Worth trying...

Subject is too dark. Used Nikon D3200

Have you tried setting the ISO to a reasonable level like 200? I see that the in the overexposed example you are shooting outdoors, with what looks like bright sun. The rule of thumb for this should be 1/100 of a sec at F16 and ISO 100. This picture is 1/60 of a second at F4 and 3200 ISO. I...

    Clovis' Nikon Nuggets

The Pup and I went on another outing with the local Carolinas' Nature Photographers Association yesterday. We went to an impressive botanical garden in Lake City, SC. Lots of flowering, and other plants. They had some interesting artwork as well. I didn't get a lot of flower images, but...

Buy now, or wait on the Z7iii?

I'm not sure I feel like my Z5 was holding me back, but rather more that the capabilities of the Z7ii would be of use. I've been a little frustrated lately with the AF performance on moving subjects. And of course the extra resolution is most welcome. Let us not forget the new camera smell...

Buy now, or wait on the Z7iii?

No, I went with the Z7ii. The Z8 is too rich for my blood.

Buy now, or wait on the Z7iii?

Well, I gave in to temptation today. B&H had their CFexpress Bs on sale for a decent amount off, and that clinched it. Now I just have to bide my time till Wednesday.

Buy now, or wait on the Z7iii?

Well, I would like to have a Z8, but really can't justify the cost. The only way I see me owning a Z8, is winning the lottery, start making money with my photography, or my wife running off with the pool boy. I don't play the lottery, currently don't sell any of my pictures, and I don't own a...
