    Buttercup Flower with Dew

I went outside this morning around 7am and to my surprise and delight, all of the Buttercup flowers which were withered yesterday afternoon had straightened out all of their petals and were covered with dew. I grabbed the D850 and 200mm f/4 IF AIS Nikkor and re-shot this one. It is 50 images...

I got a new lens the other day

Well it is not new, it is probably 20 years old but that is young in AIS Nikkor years. Some of my Nikkors date to the 70's and they are still going strong. I have been contemplating getting another macro lens for a while. The 55mm f/2.8 AIS Micro Nikkor is a superb macro lens but is no good for...

To take a line from the Wizard of Oz, "Well bust my buttons!"

Sitting around, not having anything to do I decided I would do a head to head comparison of the 50mm f/1.8 AIS Nikkor (a lens that I always considered extraordinarily sharp) and the 50mm f/2 Nikkor H I got with my first Nikon, a black FTN, back in 1973. The 50mm f/1.8 AIS Nikkor has been...

    Female Golden Huntsman Spider

I shot this interesting spider in a light tent with the D850 and 50mm f/1.8 AIS Nikkor mounted on the PB-6 bellows. She is quite a striking spider and that is quite a set of labidognath chelicerae and fangs she has there! Given that she is a fairly large spider, that would be a bite that would...

    Female Carpenter Bee

I did not put this in macro because the magnification was around 1:2 Outwardly, Carpenter Bees very closely resemble Bumble Bees in both size and shape but there are actually some notable differences, a few of which include Bumble Bees have fur covered abdomens whereas Carpenter Bees have...

    Overexposure in low EV scenes

My girlfriend's D7100 started overexposing lower EV scenes by about 3 stops. I was stumped because higher EV scenes were properly exposed. In desperation I did a factory reset and the problem disappeared. Has anyone else experienced this?

    Female Twin Flagged Jumping Spider

Jumping Spiders are adorable, as spiders go. Those huge eyes give them an almost comical appearance. This little one was only about 9mm long from leg tip to leg tip. I took this image (actually 48 images focus stacked in PS) with the D850 and 50mm f/1.8 AIS Nikkor mounted on a PB-6 bellows. The...

    My DIY macro rig

I came upon a YouTube video by Allan Walls, who is a terrific macro photographer, on how he built his DIY macro rig. Using his ideas and tweaking it a little bit for me I came up with my version. It is constructed of 3/4" MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) and the base is 24"x 36". There is a...

    Female Ground Crab Spider

This "itsy bitsy" (3.2mm long including legs) Ground Crab Spider was taken with a total 315mm bellows extension of a PB-6 (plus a 27.5mm PK-13 extension tube) with a 50mm f1.4 AIS Nikkor mounted reversed for a total of 6.4x magnification on the sensor. The arrangement of the eyes almost make a...

    Female Blue Dasher Dragonfly

I would really classify this as close-up rather than macro since the magnification is more like 1:5. This Blue Dasher Dragonfly female struck a rather unusual pose for a dragonfly, normally their abdomen and wings are straight out.

I just got hired by Nordstrom!

Man did this come straight out of the blue! I will be doing contract fashion work for Nordstrom'a online fashion blog. I got an email this morning from the fashion editor, Miriam Sternoff, who apparently saw my website, and sent me a message via the message page of my website and enquired if I...

Paper Wasp up close and personal...............

You may never want to get this close to a Paper Wasp, especially the other end, but the wonders of extreme macro let you count the hairs on it's head in total safety! D850, 50mm f/1.4 AIS Nikkor (reversed) on a PB-6 bellows. 195mm of extension for 5x on the sensor. 34 images focus stacked in...

I have been on kind of an "extreme macro" kick lately

This Willow Mason Wasp is less than a half inch long. I photographed it with the D850, PB-6 bellows and 35mm f/2 AIS Nikkor (reversed) which gave me a 5X magnification on the sensor. Depth of field was nil, even @ f/11, it took 31 images focus stacked in PS to get this final image. It took more...

Even something as seeming innocuous as a Ladybug Larva...................

...........can seem like a prehistoric monster from a horror movie at 3.8:1! I used the D850 with the PB-6 bellows and 55mm f/2.8 AIS Micro Nikkor and 265mm of bellows extension. Illumination was a single strobe in a Softbox directly overhead. It took 17 images to focus stack this in PS.

    Cellar Spider

This gorgeous little fella (gal I guess, I am assuming it was a female) was shot with the D850, PB-6 Bellows and 50mm f/1.4 AIS Nikkor with 215mm of bellows extension, giving a magnification ratio of 3.3:1 on the sensor. ISO 64 @ f/11 Illuminated by a single strobe in a Softbox directly...

    Cemetery outside of Williston, FL

Williston, is a small (only about 2500 people) deep southern town about 15 miles SW of Gainesville. Before you get to town there is a small cemetery with a very small (it looks like an old time school house) church on the grounds. Many of the birth dates on the graves date back all the way back...

I finally got back out and started shooting again here in Gainesville, FL

Today was a little chillier than it has been, only mid 60's but the birds and reptiles are stirring. It will be alligator mating season here soon and the troops are getting restless! Some of the images were taken with the D500 and others with the D850 with both 600mm f/4 and 200mm f/2 Nikkors.

    Luminar 4

If you guys have not heard about this program, I suggest you check it out. It has a sky replacement tool that is absolutely amazing! The sky in the original image was not bad but not spectacular. With essentially 1 click of the mouse, Luminar transforms it into an amazing sunset. Depending on...

Anyone ever used one of these?

They could come in very handy for studio work as I could mount both my Godox controller and wireless remote shutter on the D850 My only concern is whether having two units on the same hot shoe contact might do something weird to the voltage and possibly damage the camera. Any thoughts...
