I was about seven feet away from a Heron that I was photographing when it sounded like a stick of dynamite when off and this gator popped out from under the water to try and get the bird. The gator was nowhere in site, he jumped out from under the water to get try and get the bird and was gone all in less than a second. I was amazed that I was quick enough to get this shot. Jeff

It's amazing how quick gators can be when they want something and yet how they can lay in the same spot for hours without moving!

I was watching Animal Planet one day and they had a 1500lb crocodile and said that it has a sticking speed over two times as fast as a rattlesnake. We have a lot of gators where I live and it is one of my favorite things to photograph. I had written this in a earlier post but in a subdivision not far from where I live they found an eight foot gator in the fenced in back yard and a few weeks later a lady that is like a second mom to me that live next door to the one that was found in the back yard opened her door from the house to her garage and had another gator about twelve inches away from her in the garage with his mouth open looking at her. She is 91 years old and told me she has never shut a door and move as fast as she did that day. This was about a month ago. Jeff

Gators are so cool, but you can be surprised, on a visit to florida, I was taking some early morning shots of dragonflies at pond near my Hotel, and just about stepped on a gator,, he was so surprised, he flew out over the water and came down in a splash! I am not sure who was more surprised.

Better he went for the Heron than for you... Think of the photos you could have gotten though. One of the alternative magazines would probably pay thousands for a picture of a gator with your leg down its throat. Hummm, I'll have to remember that next time I need a new lens - I wonder if 2 legs pays double. :)

Blue Heron from this morning

I went out this morning to see if I could get any shots and this is the only thing I found. This was taken with a Nikon D7000 and my Nikon 70-200VR 2.8 with a Nikon 20E III 2x teleconverter. This combination is equivalent to 600mm on a film camera. Jeff

Jeff, I finally got around to looking at your gallery from the National Naval Aviation Museum. The aircraft in photo #50 is an A-7E Corsair II, BuNo 160714. I flew that actual aircraft in 1978.

I've got over 3,000 hours in A-7s and they're the reason I stayed in the Navy for 20 years. Fly on and off the boat, go low, go fast, blow stuff up - what a hoot!
