Gorgeous portrait...except for that shiny spot near the top of her head. That's the only thing that I can see that I would change. Other than that........stunning photo.

The light leak from the flash on head was done intentionally.
I also have a picture of her without it but I like the emphasis of the light wrapping around her and also the effect of the light leak.
Im really impressed on the performance of the big (6 ft) reflective umbrella. The light was distributed evenly even though Im standing in front of the model.

Your work is really very nice. You've inspired me to quit shooting environmental/location people shots all the time and get indoors on occasions ;). Now I just need to find a stack of used SB-600/700's and maybe a 900 (and stands, umbrellas, bounce cards (and a soft box would be nice))

Rick, strobing is fun but expensive. It really does wonders to you subjects.

But you can also mimic that using available light with the use of reflectors. I have attended a workshop of the famous travel and portrait photographer Manny Librodo (you can view his works here:Manuel Libres Librodo Jr.'s Photo Galleries at pbase.com) He doesnt use any strobes of flash. Only available light with reflectors.

If you invest in a flash, get the strongest flash you can afford. And lots and lots of light modifiers.

one question though: do you do any photoshoping other than i noticed you mentioned about background in one of the previous shots?

Thank you simonhodge. Im sure if you just put your heart into it, you can do it too. Im still learning here.
Yes, All of my pictures are post processed. :)

Hi guys! I'm new here on Nikonites, but have been doing Photography since 2009.

I specialize in Car Photography, and often shoot strobist-style. I only have very basic equipment, and have never tried shooting with Nikon's CLS because I don't really have that kind of gear. If the time comes that I could afford it, I will definitely give it a try! :)

The photos below were shot with my Nikon D40 and 2 China-made speedlights (YN467 and TT520), triggered by "Poverty Wizards" (CTR-301p).

Since cars are extremely large subjects, I always shoot on-location. What I love about the D40 is its ability to sync with a fast shutter speed, even up to 1/1000 sec. This allows me more control over the ambient light, and I don't need extremely powerful flashes just to overcome the ambient.

I'm not nearly as good as Ranie on portraiture but here's a shot.

2-light setup: A shoot-through umbrella camera right above head-level as my main light, and a bare flash with a velcroed DIY large bounce card camera left at around my shoulder-level as my fill light. You’ll see the two catch-lights on here eyes from the two light sources.

Please feel free to critique my photos.

If I had the chance to shoot this again, I'd bring more modifiers. I’d use a large softbox as my fill light to balance out the shadows in order to avoid the harsh shadow on her chin caused by the bag. I’ll also add maybe a reflector to light up the black bag a little more, and perhaps add a hair light.
