I shot this one using my 55mm - 200mm VR lens. Please tell me where I went wrong. Thanks!

I thought the crop would help.
Tashi, photography is a personal thing. Obviously you thought there was SOMETHING in this shot, otherwise you would not have taken it.
STOP with the wrong stuff. There is very little wrong with photography. The question that is most important to ask is...
"What will make this shot better?"
Okay Dude? :)

Got it, Pete! Thank you. I did crop it but I didn't go too close.

Tashi, the best advice I've ever been given is to get a lens that forces you to get close and intimate with shots like that... 11-16 or 12-24 --- or at least act like that is what you have. You'd be amazed by the shots you get when you put yourself in it.

You don't have a choice!! :)

It depends on what you want to do with the background and the effect you're going for. A wider angle lens like these mentioned will not give you the "compressed", blurred background.

Tashi, I think it was a good call to use the longer focal length. As far as getting "close and personal", it depends on the subject. The child clearly saw you and I think is the subject of your photo. So the interaction is clear on the pic. It's very a nice capture. The problem was in the cropping, and Pete showed you the difference.
