Purchases you regret buying.

Having taken up photography, and enjoying it, looking at all the things we can buy, I needed a tripod.
Thinking any tripod will do, so got a cheap one off ebay for about £14,

Looking back now, not the best buy I've made, so will put this one down to experience, and now start looking for one more suitable for the job.

My 55-200 was the worst purchase I ever made. I used it for maybe a month or two before I upgraded. Bought it new and the market is so flooded with them that it's only worth less than half I paid two months earlier.

Ha!

How about camera bags? As in, "Where do I even start?"

Fiiinally found camera bag "Nirvana" in the unassumingly named Manfrotto Backpack 50.

I thought I'd use a flash bracket - I got one - it is a jim dandy

It is a great bracket and got it for a fraction of the regular price down by d'Bay.

My regret? Not listening to those who said they had a bracket but never used it anymore.

Used mine for a very short period of time - now it takes up space in my collection of camera accessories - like my Fong Whale Tale diffuser. (another regret). Works great - glad I got it cheap, but still, don't use it much at all anymore. Fold-able easily carried fabric one does the trick as well IMHO.

Good thread.....

A Vivitar 400mm telephoto lens. I was so eager to get a lens that went out to 400mm, that i bought it without thinking much. I was able to get the hang of manually focusing it and i was able to get okay photos with it. Once i bought my D7100, it was a lot easier to use since the 7100 was able to meter with the lens. In the end, i only used it a few times and sold it with all my Nikon stuff. Good thing i only paid $100 for it. It really was the worst purchase i had ever made in regards to photographic gear; not because the product sucked, but because i should have never have bought it in the first place.

The 1st tripod is ALMOST a regret, but...

It was cheap enough that I could afford glass faster, and with a patient hand, it does the job. A nicer one is on the NAS list, but it's not so horribly urgent that I kick myself over it. Other than that, I'm a research kinda guy. I research EVERYTHING (except that tripod, doh) before I buy, so I usually get something useful the 1st time.

I do kinda wish I had bought a Macbook Pro instead of the iMac, as portability would be a HUGE plus for me. Editing on that beautiful 27" screen though... sometimes it's hard to regret that too. ;)

Yeah that portability versus big screen is a real "tossing in your sleep" decision either way you go. Like you I have a big screen but only 21".

Could you please research the Tamron 90mm macro and get back to me soon - I can buy one here for a reasonable (not sensational) price? :)

The 43-86 f/3.5 non-AI Nikkor. It was an absolute DOG of a lens and was very prone to flare. I sold mine after about 3 months.

I have things I regret, NOT buying when I had the chance. Otherwise my only wonder remains whether 7000 would've kept my frustrations at bay longer than 5100 did given more buttons and whistles, but doesn't really matter at this point.

Else I've kept things pretty frugal, somehow, so no regrets just yet.

I've been looking at Macro lenses for a while already, LOL!

I'd recommend the Sigma 105mm macro, or the Nikkor over the Tamron, but that's just how I decided on what to put on MY NAS list, and just based on research and recommendations from other photog's. ;) The Tamron doesn't get bad reviews though, and I can't give any real-life comparison between any of them, as I don't own a single one yet.

Variable ND filter.

I didnt realise just how bad it was until I started recataloging all my shots...

Next time I buy the NDs it will be a good brand and a good set of non-variables!

The only thing I did regret buying was that Nikon remote cheap Chinese crap thing. I don't regret it for the couple of bucks it cost but that it actually made me angry enough to smash it with a hammer.

That is one of the best things I ever brought. It's still going well after nearly 50 years.

Well, I can only wish it would have worked for me. But it ended up costing me way more than the price of the ring.

I have this exact lens!

Paid $50 - fooled around with it for a couple of days a few years ago and never used it again.....
