SO, what are you going to do with the D300? Give it to Jack?...oh wait were are over that one, never mind. (Just playing with Jack LOL) Good going on the D800 at least this time the upgrade was on your terms and not Mother nature's

LOL amen to that. It's funny, one of the guys @ MPEX remembered that also. I love that place, you just don't get that kind of service anymore.

The D300s has gone to a good home. I really wanted to keep it as a backup, but budget constraints just wouldn't allow. I needed the cash flow to make this new kit happen. The grip was a must have for me, and I've wanted an SB-910 for a long time.

As you know, I've always advocated the LumoPro flash units because they're awesome, inexpensive, and made by my local photo shop. I have 2 of them, one of which is the sole survivor of the Great Flood. They're also manual units, so I wanted a TTL unit to complete a 3 speedlight setup, and now I have it. The major stuff is out of the way now. Short of a D4 (LOL), I'm sitting in a pretty good place with the equipment I want/need right now. A few more speedlight softboxes and modifiers, and I'll be a happy camper.

No, I'm good. I negotiated mine for $2,100. Gonna be hard to beat that, even if they do drop the price.

Great. enjoy! just thought to send in case you might want the newer model. 1 stop better iso, and higher FPS, if you needed it. $2100 is a nice price. damn they started at $3k when announced, no?
wait till you add a grip. its a monster. I think bigger than any nikon so far.

Yeah, I was stoked and ready to go out shooting today.

Camera settings tweaked - Check
Batteries charged - Check
Bag packed - Check

Ready to head out the door (literally one foot out the door) and it starts pouring down rain LOL. Looks like it passed through quickly though. Should dry out in a couple hours. I want to get some pics of my son this evening for sure, even if I have to set up in the studio.

Go out afterwards and look for opportunities for reflections. . . I love shooting after rain. Shot this one a couple years ago in Venice.

I'm not seeing anything in the rumour specs that would make me either wait if I didn't have one or upgrade as I do, plus the price will be higher.

By the way, same EN-EL15s for this thing, right?

Yup!

I was pissy about having to switch batteries. I have x4 of the EN-EL3e types that fit my D90 and D300s. Stupid batteries...it's a conspiracy. Make one type and be done with it.

I hate being nickel and dimed over that kind of stuff. Actually that wouldn't be so bad compared to $50-$70 for a battery.

Danke. I just printed Ken Rockwell's D800 setup guide. I wanna be sure to set up my camera just_like_Ken before I get started! Don't worry, I sent a donation to help feed his starving family.

That right there is funny stuff!

If you find no need for those D90 batteries I might be able to take them off your hands.

Well, this was a different kind of rain.

It was the OH GOD OH GOD WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE kind with lightning, hail and flash flooding. We got off pretty lucky here, some areas around us got almost 6" yesterday.

If you find no need for those D90 batteries I might be able to take them off your hands.
I didn't think of selling them off here. They were included in my trade-in. :(

The dynamic range of the D800 is pretty impressive. Pic #1 is SOOC with a few minor color adjustments. Pic #2 is a 5-shot HDR...not much difference:

The dynamic range and ability to recover highlight / shadow is staggering on this camera. It never ceases to amaze me and I haven't bothered with HDR for high contrast scenes since I got it.

Yeah, it's almost shocking. I couldn't believe it.

I usually do 5 brackets: -2 -1 0 +1 +2

The "0" is the keeper, the normal shot you would've taken with just a single exposure. When I flipped back through my HDR files from my D300, the difference between the "0" and the final HDR composite was pretty stark. There is huge difference:

D800-2-2.jpg

I've only just been toying with my D800 today and I have to say that I am thoroughly impressed. Aside from minor tweaks, my post processing time is about 20% of what it was. The colors are vibrant, the range is fantastic, and the images are very sharp.
