i've always wondered why the engine of the jet above (&others like it) are not perfectly rounded. They are a bit flat on the bottom of the opening. Anyone have any ideas? I'm figuring it must be aerodynamics.

The 737 is the only one I know of that's like that. If you look at early 737's, they have a smaller motor, perfectly round, mounted below the wing. At some point around the 737-200 or 737-300 they upgraded to a physically larger motor. To get enough ground clearance, they moved the motor in front of the wing and put all the accessories beside the motor, hence the 'cheeks' on the side of the nacelle.
