    max flash sync speed

When you go faster than the max sync speed of the camera, you will then be at the mercy of the Speedlight. In other words, when you use the High Speed Sync mode (ie FP sync), it's the speed light that dictates what the max sync speed would be. I have a SB700 and I have used it at 1/4000 sec...

Hopefully Not a Stupid Question: Flash vs. Polarizing Filter

When I do product photography of shiny objects, a polarizer with flash is absolutely necessary otherwise I'll spend a lot of photoshopping time to get rid of hot spots. Yes, the polarizer will take down the exposure by 1 to 1.5 stops but it does save me time post-production. Attached is a...

a little help with autofocus and my d5100

First Lesson in Videography - Do NOT USE AUTOFOCUS. Ok.. when it comes to video, here's the mantra - repeat after me... Turn OFF Autofocus... Turn OFF Autofocus ... Turn OFF Autofocus.. Yes, please turn off autofocus - you cannot get away with using autofocus if you want your videos to not...

How to calculate image size for printing

Zutty, attached is a screen shot of the setting I use for exporting for printing. I shoot raw and export to jpg for screen or print. But if you want to print, first use the Crop (Develop screen) and crop to the size you want - eg 8x10 etc. This gives you control of the crop so you'll know...

    Light tent for indoor macro

If you are not shooting glasses or bottles, I don't think a tent is quite necessary. Attached are two images I shot for eBay and they are just done with two speedlights (a SB700 and a Vivitar 285HV) and umbrellas. The seamless background is a 2ft x 4ft white plastic sheet.

    Newbie PLEASE HELP

For those who worry that 2 mb Jpeg is not enough resolution for good pictures (for eBay), look at the directory listing of the folder I use for my Seawood eBay pictures - notice the size - they are all only about 200 Kbytes with a few going over 300Kb and then look at the pictures on the eBay...

    Newbie PLEASE HELP

I'm a product photographer for a camera store on eBay so let me give you the spec. eBay will SQUARE any image you up load so if possible crop your images in 1:1 format. Export your jpeg as 1000x1000 pixels. You can do bigger but it's useless as eBay will down grade them for you. Save your jpeg...

    Affordable 70-210mm Lens

Cannot afford Nikon's 70-200mm F2.8 zoom? How about a Nikon 70-210mm F4 Zoom. It's an AF lens but since our D7100 have the built-in focus motor it will work. Looks like it's in mint condition and for $199 the price is right. Alright, it's 2-stops below the one I want :(

How can I make my d7100 focus in manual mode when shutter is pushed halfway down?

So here's the two versions of autofocus lenses. This one say M/A and M. In the M/A position, it will autofocus but you can override that by just turning the focus ring. It's very smooth - there's a clutch mechanism that will let you manually focus without damaging the autofocus motor: This...

    Shooting flashes with fast apertures

Unfortunately the D5100 do not have High Speed Sync (Nikon calls it FP mode). Your D5100 have a max sync speed of 1/200 sec. You have to go to the Flash Sync setting to select it to be 1/200 (and leave it there.) I think it defaults to Auto. Now to make use of it, you have to shoot in manual...

    Nikon 70-200mm ED f2.8 Push-Pull zoom

I have an opportunity to buy an old used 70-200mm f2.8 Zoom lens for a very good price. It's the ED series and does not have a build-in autofocus motor - my D7100 works well with it. I tried it and the AF is quite fast. Cool to zoom with the push-pull barrel. The question is does anyone have...
