    Nikon 200-500mm and beyond infinity.

It was a set of circumstances unique to me. Well, almost. The last time I photographed a solar eclipse was on a ship 53 years ago. I was younger and more flexible plus cameras were all manual back then. This experience has taught me something though. Two pieces of blu-tac should suffice plus...

It was set to manual. But with the dimness of the sun’s image it made viewing it quite difficult. The filter is extremely strong.

That’s what I did but used Blu-tac - a rubberised gel with good adhesive properties. My D7100 doesn’t have a fold down screen. Hence why I used LV. But it’s a battery eater. More blu-tac should do the job.

It’s not a prime lens of course. I don’t anticipate focusing on the moon would be a problem but extended to 500mm the focusing becomes extremely critical. Set exactly on infinity the image is sharp. A little further either way and focus is lost. I used a tripod and LV mode. So the camera had to...

No, the title doesn’t refer to Buzz Lightyear. 🤣 The focusing ring on the 200-500 has a marker for infinity. But frustratingly, it allows movement beyond that setting. To try and ensure it stayed on infinity for this week’s solar eclipse I used some blu-tac to keep it from moving. Sadly it...

@Dawg Pics , many thanks for that. 👍 I’ve no immediate plans to buy a Nikon Z but should I do that software looks just the ticket.

Gents, thanks for your feedback. Clearly it’s a matter of what’s important to each of us how we spend our money and what we consider value. I’m more than happy to splash the cash where I’m going to get an improvement in photos. I rarely change my cameras. I have a film Olympus OM-2 bought in...

That’s understood. But I’m required to buy PE again after three years because it will stop working. So if I keep the camera for 9 years that’s £255 when there’s been no change to the camera. That’s the bit I find hard to accept. I don’t condone piracy but you can understand why some people...

The same as the higher setting on the Z6. 👍

What image type is on the D7100?

@Needa, I’ve no setting on my D7100 to select colour depth, lossless compressed or just compressed. Having done some research NX Studio would appear to be a decent alternative to the rip-off Adobe PSE. I would have paid £85 for a lifetime licence but expecting you to buy again after just three...

@Needa , is a nef file from a D7100 different to a nef file from the Nikon Z range? Surely RAW is RAW isn’t it?

When I bought my Nikon D7100 DSLR 10 years ago my existing version of PSE didn’t recognise the camera so I had to buy the latest version - 14. It was on CD. Installed it and all was well until I changed the computer on which it was installed. I didn’t unregistered it and had some problems...
