A good tripod will last a very long time. Yes they cost more, but if you figure how long a good one lasts it's not that much. A cheap tripod will most likely need replacing in short order plus it won't work well.

Thanks for sharing these wonderful photos guys. Life has severely gotten in the way and it's been a year or so since I pointed a lens in the direction of a train. When I can I'll be trackside again.
I moved from Nikon's to Fuji's. Enjoyed my Nikon SLRs and DSLRs , but I'm loving my Fuji's. I would like to try a Nikon mirrorless, but the cost of admission is holding me back. I'm sure you could tweek the Nikon files to give you any look you'd like.
They are amazing machines for sure. The brain power to figure out the construction of those is quite something. Except check out that parking brake, certainly old school. ;)
Easy to see why it got that name. I wonder if that locomotive was once a Southern unit. I believe Southern used a lot of locomotives long hood forward. Great catch Sandpatch. (y)
