Which lens to choose ?

Hi All,

Posting after a long time. Currently I own a D7000 with 50mm 1.8D, 18-55mm, 55-200mm lenses. Now, I am kind of confused about the lens to buy next ! I basically do weddings and events/gigs.

There are two options - 85mm 1.8D and Tokina 11-16mm.

I already have a 50mm, so do I need a 85mm?

Thanks & Regards

Sourav - based on your experience with wedding photography or events, which focal length do you often use with your zoom lenses? How much is your budget?

For wedding photographers, the Nikon 24-70mm f2.8 is usually the bread and butter. It minimizes the time in changing lenses during the ceremony compared to using prime lenses.

For your D7000, I think you can get rid most of your zooms and just get the Nikon 17-55mm f2.8 DX lens. If the price is too high, consider a used lens which normally cost around $900 - $950 for that lens.

The Nikon 28mm f1.8G or the 35mm f1.8G DX lens are also great options as an alternative.

The Tokina 11-16mm f2.8, although a very good and sharp lens, is not recommended when taking group shots due to heavy distortion. People's faces looks wider on either sides and elongated in the middle. It is great for landscape shots but not with buildings.

Thank you for your input. I did think about 24-70mm, but it is way over my budget. Currently my budget is around 1000$. Generally, in the weddings, I use the minimum focal length 18mm for the wide angle shots and use the 50mm for the bokeh shots and the portraits. In the Gig shoots, I use 50mm for low light conditions, else 18-55mm for the wide shots. I play with the 55-200mm if the light is good.
Regarding 85mm, it won't be helpful in weddings right, specially when it is indoor?

Yes, changing lens becomes a problem during a wedding :(. The moment you change to 50mm, you find a really good wide frame.

Thanks

we do weddings with D7000 ..done 40 this year...dont mess about 18-200mm Sigma VR and I carry a D3200 as back up with a 10-20mm Sigma...

If you carnt get it in your pocket dont use it ...bags and boxes to carry forget it .
