Do ya'll feel it is a necessity to get warranty with lenses? I am about to purchase the tokina 11-16 DX II. I was going to purchase it from B+H because they offer warranties. If the Houston Camera Exchange has it available, I may purchase it from them. I do not have any real warranty experience with HCE so I am skeptical. I just really want this lens so I would rather not wait for the shipping time frame.If anyone has any experience with warranties with either B+H or the HCE, what would you suggest?

With Nikon USA lenses, the original owner are entitled with a 5 year warranty. This type of warranty isn't even being offered with other countries.

I'm not a big fan of warranty when it comes to lenses since I don't use my equipment that often unlike photo journalists.

With camera bodies, I think the 1 year warranty is sufficient.

It's just like insurance, you may or may not need it. It's a risk that you need to decide for yourself if it is worth the investment.

Glenn, Canada has the same 5 year warranty on it's lenses. There is one little thing, though: if I buy a lens from the U.S. or any other country, I have no warranty. The warranty is only valid in the country it was purchased.
I don't really know about other lens manufacturers warranties. I'd like to assume that they would have their own warranty programs. Just makes sense, doesn't it? As for buying an extra warranty, well.....that's a decision that only you can make. I wouldn't, but that's just me.

Good points. I would need to check Tokina's warranties and go from there. I have always bought warranties because I know how clumsy I can be. I do feel safer and more comfortable with the warranties. I do tend to use my warranties more often that not.

Good to know Jack. I know Sigma only offers a 1 year manufacturer warranty. It might be similar with Tokina and Tamron lenses.

My experience with warranties is the Georgia Warranty.

I agree, Glenn. I would assume that those companies would have some sort of warranty, otherwise I think they would be out of business, especially in this type of competitive market.

I spoke with a representative at HCE. They basically said they do not have any in stock and won't be receiving any until mid to late October. I will have to order from B+H. The representative mentioned that the manufactures warrant only covers dust and wear and tear but not if I break it. Like I said, I am clumsy so I decided I will have to have that extra security measure. Every time I drop or break an item, it just happens to be on the one that did not have warranty or it just expired. Just my luck. I can order it tomorrow from B+H with a warranty and not have to go through the hassle. Thanks for the feedback!

Tamron has a 6 yr. warranty on their lenses. The guy at the camera store said Tamron has the best warranty in the business.
The AF motor in my Tamron 70-300mm lens messed up awhile back. I sent it in, and they replaced it without question.
Warranties are good............

I typically purchase warranties but from actual stores I can walk into like best buy. I have never really ordered something like this online so I was a bit skeptical about the warranties. I was able to get the lens and the warranty. I feel more secure with it.
