I finally received my D5100 after much review between the D3200 and the D5100. I am very excited to get to know this great camera that Nikon has put out. I am sure this will suit my needs for many years till I am ready to move up. My next purchase will be a zoom lens, I will be researching the best one I need for the funds I have. Any suggestions from anyone would be greatly appreciated. My needs for zoom at this time are for sports action and long range in general. Also any other ideas that the Nikonites family could suggest would be helpful as well.
1. Tripod
2. Flash

Nikon family for life.

Thank you in advance.

Congrats! And you made the right choice. For my D5100, I have a prime 35mm, the kit 18-55mm, and the 55-200mm. By far, the kit lens is the most used.

There are lots of tripods with far ranging costs, so pick a budget. As for a flash, I'd recommend staying with the Nikon brand.

Good luck!

Congrats on your new Nikon camera! Did you purchase it body only or did you also purchase one of the kit lenses? 55-300 might suit your needs nicely. Covers a nice range in one lens and then pick up additional lenses as budget allows or requirements change:)

Congratulations. I'd recommend the Nikon SB-700 Speedlite. As far as tripods go, there's a myriad to choose from. Check out the Manfrotto line. Good luck.

Congrats on your new Nikon! I have the same one.. I picked up a 55-200 as part of a package discount but for your use, the 55-300 may be better suited.

Nice choice of camera :p

I have the kit lens, 55-200mm and a 50mm 1.8 too

Flash wise I'd save up for a SB700 but if the wait is too long, no shame in having the SB400 :)

First things first. Batteries, at least 2 spare batteries and spare fast writing cards was on the top of my list when I got my D5100.

Thank you everyone for your kind reply’s, I have taken note of all your suggestions and will be prioritizing them. The extra Battery and mem card wasnt even on my list, it probabl;y would have been the first time i needed it lol.
I have taken my first few pictures and I will be posting them in the Photo critique section soon.

I wish I had about $2,000.00+ of mad money it would be gone by tomorrow.

Thank you again.

David, we could use some "mad" money! The battery does last a long time with limited flash and no Live View... But I ordered a 2nd along with a couple extra HD cards...

Enjoy your new camera, I sure am mine!
