My wife shoots a D500 w/ 500PF 99% of the time.

The following set is from one of her rare times with the 500PF + 1.4x TC. (She makes me proud!)

Those are awesome! You were definitely in the right place at the right time and ready to capture it.

Thank you, Robin.

You are 100% correct. We all get lucky occasionally. :) I came across this feeding frenzy and it was non-stop. There must have been some sort of huge school of shad that came over the spillway at the lake and were gathered in this area not far below. I catually went back the following day and it was still furious. I've been there many (100's of times) before and never witnessed anything like it.

Some great captures, what focus settings are you using.

Thank you Mike, much appreciated.

On our D500's, we use AF-C (release priority) and either Single-Point or Group AF Mode. We almost always use Spot metering for birding.

On the Z bodies, I use AF-C (release priority) and either Single-Point, Wide Area Small, or Wide Area Large AF Modes, depending on the circumstances. Having said that, I recently read a few information from someone I respect indicating that Auto-Area AF mode has it's place as well, so I have been playing with it some lately too and having surprisingly good (to me) results.

Most of the shots above were Single-Point, although I believe Theresa's shots of the hawk were taken using Group Mode.

One thing I really miss between the D500/850 and the Z Bodies is the ability to program multiple buttons with various AF-On + Mode configs. As a result, I am (finally) getting reasonably good at rolling thru mode via Fn button + dial spin "on the fly". Lol. :)

Sure was nice to have mountain background in Las Vegas.

Edit: Not sure why EXIF data is not displaying. It is present for these images on Flicker, where that are linked from...???...

Both were shot with D500 & 500PF.
