Hi All - I hope this forum will help me with my many questions. At the young age of 55, I've decided to learn how to use a DSLR. I decided top use an older used camera, Nikon D3000, to learn how to use the basics, before spending more into a newer camera. I am totally confused about the use of aperture, shutter speed, and ISO, as it relates to indoor/outdoor pictures, as well as finding the correct balance to keep my subject on focus with a blurry background versus all on focus. Although I do understand the basics - I think - it is tough to find the settings that work for each situation. I'm trying to find a method for taking pictures while remember the settings I'm using. I've watched videos, and I have bought a training video. I also bought Luminar 2018 - they gave me good deal since I am a teacher. All help will be appreciated!

Thanks,

Aldo
Hello fellow newbie and fellow teacher! The last time I tried to shoot "serious" photography was with my Pentax ME Super. I am lost in a whole new world, somewhere deep in the menu of my new Nikon. I look forward to following your progress and learning with you.

Welcome Aldo. You are going to do fine with your "new" camera. It will be a fun experience.

Also @eldertreemother welcome to you also. This is a great forum with folks of all experience levels. (And it is a friendly bunch, too.)

Thanks Chucktin - I was reading about the importance of interpreting the histogram. It is on my list of things to understand. I am taking lots of pictures, but I start concentrating on specific types and I will try and keep up with the settings I will be using. Thanks for the awesome suggestions!

Thanks Dawg Pics - You are right - I have watched way too many videos and read too many blogs. I actually printed out some charts about settings, along with my notes. So .... I found myself looking at my notes too much! I am getting out there - usually on weekends, but I will try and get out more often for sure. Thanks! And, yes, I did had a card in the slot - not exactly sure what happens but, for sure, it has happened when it is too bright outside.

Two things make you a successful photographer - chutzpah and time. And time costs the most, far, far more than any camera body or lens or whatever you'll ever accumulate.
Chutzpah, in spades, will help you claim the space as yours (several weasel words here) where you need to be to get "the picture".

(phew, opinionated, who me? NaH!)

Not a bad thing to be opinionated! For sure! I can be that way too .... just not for photography :) I'm hoping to master my D3000 sometime and buy me a new toy in the future. I did get some of the lingo you used .... just some!

I still read as much as I can. Check out Steve Perry and his Backcountry Gallery if you haven't already. He is a fantastic teacher.
