Lexar to stop Memory card production

Don't panic. We all remember Betamax, but do you remember that Betamax was used for pro video production for many years? XQD cards aren't going to go away, they are used in high quality video cameras. We'll see what happens to prices, but I predict that global warming will kill us all off before the XQD card disappears.

But pro video betamax went away, so why do you think pro video XQD cards will NOT go away?

In time SD cards, hard drives, SLRs, alkaline batteries, DVDs, gasoline vehicles and many other things will go away. XQD cards are used enough in video that they aren't going to go away quickly. Nikon has apparently sold a boat load of D500s. I suspect that someone will want to tap that market for a while down the road.

I was going through my memory cards recently:

Lexar 64GB 644X (I bought it in 2013 I think)
Lexar 64GB 1000X

Then bought:
Lexar XQD 2933X 128GB
Lexar XQD 2933X 64GB

When looking at the new Sony SD G series I also noticed it is slower then the Lexar 2000X or 1800X.

Then almost bought on e-bay a superb offer on a Lexar 1800X 256GB card, only to find Lexar never made this.

My experience was similar to people before, good perfomance (bit careful with advertised speed and write speed) no issues encountered.

For the future of XQD = Sony makes cameras with XQD and makes XQD cards, I do not see them change soon.

Mike, those 2000x uhs-II sd cards cost more than xqd cards. Still, your point is valid. SD cards can do the job the great majority of the time. I have used 95mb.sec cards and gotten bursts of 20 -30 with no slow down.

I actually would ask: How many cameras outperform a D500 with a fast sd card in buffer capacity? Hardly any.

However I do believe that an XQD card for the D500 is a better price value proposition, with Lexar (RIP 2017) cards that is.
