A few thoughts on the D500

There is no intention to criticise .The op is posting images in support of his opinion on this camera.I am just stating that I cannot tell if they are in focus. I am very interested in this camera and wish to learn as much as possible about its abilities . Perhaps he could give us some 100% crops

My post crossed with that of grandpaw and I thank him for the crops

I have had several cameras over the last 46 years but I must say that this D500 just blows everything else away that I have ever owned. The keeper rate on this camera is extremely high. ...This camera just does so many things very good on it's own that it makes picture taking much easier and a lot more fun. The fun factor has gone waaaaaaaay up and the work factor has gone waaaay down...

I saw some videos like this and hated them, ...but I respect this of "grandpaw".
It was mainly Steve Perry that won me over to the D500, but in general the main points seem to be:
- responsive
- it delivers
- the result is high quality

At this moment I`m waiting for the second hand market to get more desperate. In the last 2 months more second hand offers came out and they are not sold fast, but the price is a little steep for my wanting.

I have both the D800 and D810 and never use the custom memories because they cannot be relied on ..they are not memories locked like U1 and U2 of my other cameras...I just use A mode .
Now give me a lock in software and I might get interested.

Let me guess A mode and F8 ???

I think Grandpaw has gotten a lot of us thinking. Walmart has the 500 on sale (body only) for
$1,644.50 right now-anybody want to sponsor me? Paul

For the last month the body, fast SD card, backpack and the $371.00 battery grip has been on sale for $1795.00. That is what I paid for mine! And yes it was a Nikon battery grip.

F8 ,,? Strange suggestion ..I use the thumb wheel to move as appropriate but don't go over F11.
I just don't trust the memories to give me a starting point for any adjustments like you can do with a D750 and always get back to base with an on off of the camera .
Going into menus is just too much bother.

I added the extra battery and the XQD card and the card reader and the total was $1950.94 I purchased it the end of November and it just recently went off sale. They had the same deal for the D750 for exactly the same price of $1795

Perhaps Granpaw you could do a tips for the D500 like you did for the D7000
I personally have no use for the menu memories or any of the buttons top left iso/qual etc
Sounds like your insite would be more than useful.

Starting a Nikon D500 tips thread might be helpful to some folks, I like the idea.

First tip.... The ISO button is on the top right hand side near the "ON", "OFF switch, and nowhere near the QUAL button. LOL

I never used the memory user settings on my D7200 or D7100, so I didn't miss them on the D500. The controls that I use all the time are in essentially the same place, that's the exposure comp, the focus selection, the shutter and f-stops wheels. There is a dedicated back button focus button on the D500, and I know most people will appreciate that. The joy stick style focus point selector is cool, too, but muscle memory seems to keep my thumb going to the "regular" focus point selector. :)

I have been doing sports photography for 40 years, and this is the best camera I've ever used for that. It's also amazing for wildlife. I think Jeff's photos, both here and in other threads, demonstrate the camera's abilities well. Although, the pictures would be nothing special if not for Jeff's talents as a photographer.

That is very high praise for this camera. Thanks!

Tip #2 I use the "My MENU" a lot because it puts everything that I need in one easy to find place so I have quick access to all important menus. On my D500 I went to CUSTOM SETTINGS F1 and programed my Fn2 button on the lower left hand side of the back of the camera to go straight to "MY MENU" so I don't have to fumble around trying to get it to the "MY MENU", it just goes straight to it no matter where I was previously in the menu system.

As I have different thoughts, opinions, observations or suggestions on my D500 I am going to start posting them. We are all at different levels in our photography with many of you being a lot more knowledgeable about this subject than I am and many that have a lot more skills than I have so some of my thoughts could be helpful to some and just a waste of time for others but I hope a few of you might find some of what I post helpful or at least informative.

I have had several Nikon digital cameras in the last ten years and with all of them I found I was using the EV adjustment on just about every shot because every camera seemed to be over exposing the shot for me. One of the first things I have noticed about the D500 is that it pretty much gets the exposure right without me having to use the EV adjustment to get it like I think it should be. This is just one more of the many things that makes me like my D500 more every time I shoot with it.
