Another Tidbit about the User settings I discovered

Probably all of you D7100 users are already aware of this, but just in case you don't I will share it.

I have U2 set for Manual with Shutter speed to 1/500, f10 etc. These are base settings that I use and switch from for different situations. So if for example I change the shutter speed to 1/100 it stays at that setting until I either change it or switch to U1 and back to U2. What I discovered, however is that if I have changed U2 and then shut off the camera, when I turn it back on the settings did not return to the base U2 settings bu were still on what I had changed it to previously before shutting off the camera. It will return to the original settings if I switch to U1 and then back to U2.

This surprised me because I assumed that turning the camera off and back on (even overnight) that it would reset to the U2 saved settings. The On-Off-On sequence doesn't do it. Only switching the modes does it.

Yes, mine does the same way as well. Same on the D750 also. I have to be careful when changing exposure compensation to remember to change it back.

The U settings make me more crazy than not. If I mess with them, I'm never sure if I re-saved them or what. So I just keep U1 with basic shutter button focus with auto area focus mode and auto iso. Good for if I hand my camera to my wife to take a picture. U2 is set to my basic BBF settings and auto iso. Something I can switch on quickly if Big Foot appears in my yard and I'm too nervous to think. Otherwise I don't mess with the U's anymore because if I teak something I'll surely get myself confused if I shut the camera off vs change modes.

The U settings create an exposure specificity that I just do not need. Perhaps wedding photographers or fashion photographers might find them useful but I do not mess with them

Not really. They provide a starting point because you can adjust as needed just like you would do without them. For example you decide you are going to walk around the park on a cloudy day to shoot BIF. You set your camera with preliminary settings. Then as the photo op presents itself you may adjust shutter or aperture or if not using Auto ISO, adjust that too from your preliminary settings. The advantage for me is that after adjusting for the shot I can return to my preliminary settings with the simple twist of a knob and all the settings are returned to the starting point in one shot.

I use U1 for a preliminary setting for BIF: Shutter priority set to 1/1600, initial aperture f10 and Auto ISO & +1.0 EV. U2 is set for the bird in a tree (stationary object type shot) Manual, Shutter 1/500, Aperture f8 and ISO 400. As stated, these are only starting points for what I usually encounter and are changed as warranted.

The User settings just make it easy for me to pick up the camera as I run out the door for a daily walk. If I feel that the conditions will change for whatever reason, I can use A, S, M also. Ha!
