First portrait shoot

Long story short...a young family contacted my about informal portraits. I explained that I have no experience but would give it a try with no obligation should they no like the work.
We shot at two locations. I took a little over 1000 images which I pared down to 250 for them to review. They were very happy and purchased 50 in digital form.

All in all I feel like it went well.

There is a real shortage of event and portrait photographers in my small town so I'd like to get better and take advantage of the opportunity.

So, help me get better by commenting on a couple of the photos from the shoot.

Without having EXIF its a little hard for people to critique the settings but you seem to have exposed well and got the sky right (not blown out).

For informal shots you've done a pretty good job :) What was your pricing for 50 on a disk?

I charged them $300. I had about 6 hours of time in on this.

I am not one to give any kind of advice on these other than to say that I think they look very nice. Sharp and colors look good without losing anything to over or under exposure. Good job on your first go.

The second one is great .Over all I like them.The next to last I would have moved them so their feet are not in the mosaic and eliminate the roof top. In the last one I don't care for the reflection of the truck in the door. Just my opinion, I wasn't there to see what limitations you may have had.

I don't know why the data doesn't go with them either..

May I ask how you came up with $300 for the 50 images? I've been selling some photography here and there but never know how to price them.

I agree with the others, for your first go you came up with some good images, the sky most most details are properly exposed and with the high contrast light that you were shooting in that can be difficult.
your poses are creative as well, that is always something I feel nervous about when shooting people, how to pose them.

My only critique to give you would be to always pay attention to your highlights, the highlighted areas once overexposed are tough to get back when you try to post edit them, unless you are always shooting RAW then your chances for getting back overexposed areas are better. Shooting underexposed tends to be better of the two, its easier to correct post edit.

One thing that can help, forgive me if you know, is the highlight review option on your image playback, it will show you areas that are over exposed and then you can adjust to help properly expose the image.

I spent 6 hours in total and thought $50 USD per hour was fair. Client agreed and booked a commercial shoot for next month! Happy, happy!
