What causes pixelation?

But that is how those previous photos were uploaded so I can check that off the list of causes. Hmm....

The last JPEG you uploaded (006 resize) was some 127KB which had to be compressed at 1024*684. If not, the file size would have been much larger.

Is it possible the NEF gets converted during processing? I convert to TiFF but can also set it to JPEG when exporting it to other programs.

J-see, what dimensions do you suggest I use to resize the file for uploading here? Paul suggested 1000 pixels on the long side. Here is one with 1000 pixels on the long side with a resolution of 96. Regardless of the size I save it, the forum will resize if it is any larger. I still see a little pixelation. Even when uploading this size to Facebook, it also displays pixelation.

And here is one with 1000 pixels on the long side with a resolution of 300.

Just something to try... Save, or convert your current JPG's, to .PNG format for uploading to Nikonites or FB; both sites accept this format. Since .PNG is a lossless format compression should not affect it. PNG files will be larger than JPG's, just so ya know.

I've been meaning to add this to my workflow but I just haven't been able to get into the habit of it yet.

Do I need to set any sizes for PNG? I've never used it, Paul.

I loaded the shot to my desktop and checked it and it looks clean. Here's a zoomed portion:

There are no compression artefacts so the posterisation should be solved too. Even the 1MB file-size is as large as the version I processed.

I use 1024 at the long side for here. That's the largest format possible.

Yes, image resizing is independent of what format you're saving to so I would suggest resizing your images to 1,000 pixels on the long side, and then doing a "Save as" .PNG (without Compression (PS will prompt you about compression)). No promises this will solve your problem but I'm thinking this *should* do the trick.

As a test I just now resized a D750 RAW file to 1,000 pixels on the long side, and saved it to .PNG without any compression; the resultant file was 3.8MB so yeah... Be prepared for larger file-sizes compared to the JPG formatted shots we're all used to.

Hope this helps...

I did a side-by-side of the sky gradient in your previous shot and the latest version.

It looks solved to me but if I keep looking at it long enough, I start to see all kind of things. ;)

The forum does resample to only show a smaller size on the page, but if the image is a little larger (up to about 1024 pixels size), then here, readers can click them and see the larger size. That seems a plus.

I don't see whatever you are calling pixelization issues. They look good to me.

The Adobe JPG Quality 12 is surely overkill for routine viewing purposes. 12 might be appropriate if that JPG is to serve as your archived master copy, but for routine and expendable temporary viewing purposes, it seems excessive file size for no good purpose. IMO, Adobe 9 is fine for printing, and a web site could use a bit less without it being an issue...

Here is the PNG file. Sized to 1024 on the long side with a resolution of 96. When I upload it to Facebook, I am STILL getting pixelation.

And looking at the preview, I STILL see pixelation here. Grrr...this is so frustrating.
