A couple of DX lenses on my D750

I agree. It all depends on what I am shooting and WHY. Sometimes there is a shot you have to get no matter what. Sometimes it is low light and you really have to crank up the ISO and get the noise up higher than you want to get the shot. You need it you shoot it. I think using my 11-16 in the DX mode follows the same rules. The 24-120 will fill most of my wide angle needs but there are a couple of places I go that I need the extra wide of the 11-16 so I may forgo the IQ of the corners to get the shot I have to have or at least till I can afford a true Full Frame wide angle lens. Any one know of a really good deal on a wide angle prime for FX? Don't really need the zoom or even auto focus. I have found that even with the 11-16 I just set it just on the short side of infinity and shoot away and it is always in great focus as long as I am at least at lest 6 or 8 feet away from the subject.

The 14mm Rokinon is a pretty good lens. It's manual focus but it can tie you over until you save up for a shiny expensive one.:)

Wait. What? You are using an 11-16mm DX lens which is @ the equivalent of 17-24mm. The corners aren't so hot so if you crop, then aren't you around the equivalent of 18-19mm?

Just playing with it now to see what it will do. Actually looking at something like the 14mm prime for those occasions that I need something really wide. Otherwise the 24mm pretty much is handling most of my wide angle needs.

When I was looking for an ultra wide prime, I compared a Sigma 14mm f/2.8 with a Nikon 14mm f/2.8. Ultimately I went with the Nikon although the reviews of the Sigma were a hair better. I don't think it is still made, but you might be able to find a nice pre-owned copy.

I have heard some interesting things about the 14mm Rokinon. I really think a manual focus is all I need to the very wide angle anyway. That is about all I ever use with the 11-16 anyway.

The 14mm is one of the sharpest (and cheapest) available for the D750. It got some distortion but nothing you can't fix in post. She's also quite nice for night photography. I used her a lot in the past but these days less and less. In my opinion; extra-wide for landscapes often results into extra-boring and I'm using longer and longer lengths these days.

But for those shots where it works, the Rokinon/Samyang 14mm is one of the better options.

Well, I've been on holidays with nothing wider than a 28. My work around was just to shoot and stitch. I could then go as wide as I wanted and it kept my bag a lot lighter.

The main reason I want/need the extra wide is for the abandoned factory series I am working on. So much of it just begs for a wide shot and there are some areas the are so cramped that you need the wide shot to get it. And some of the areas are so dark that I just set the lens on infinity and M and shoot some very long exposures to get what I want. The DOF of a 11-16 Tokina on the D7100 shot at f8 is hard to beat for shooting in the dark and not focusing. I think the 14 Rokinon/Samyang might be the ticket. Maybe I can pick one up cheap on the used market.

The 14mm f/2.8 will do fine in dark environments. I think I paid around 300$ for a new one but also regularly see some on the used market. When it's really dark she's still a bit hard to focus but that won't be an issue for factories I assume.

I would however try to test the lens first and check if the distortion will be a problem or not. There's no "official" lens profile so none available is 100% accurate.
