Shocked !!! 70-200mm f/2.8 vrii vs sigma 150-600mm C

Hi to all


I am new here so a big hello. I would like to hear some opinions. My self and my wife have just upgraded our gear we just got full frame camera the nikon d610, I got the 70-200 vrii f/2.8 & my wife got the sigma 150-600 C. We have some other smaller cheaper lenses and we share gear.


To compare lenses I just went out with my d610 took some shots with the 70-200 at 185mm f/7.1 then took the same shot with the sigma 150-600 at the same 185mm f7.1 and to my surprise and abit of horror considering the nikon cost me £700 more the sigma, on closer inspection on the pc the shots from the sigma lens are sharper the than nikon.


Now I dont know what to do should I sell the nikon and get sigma and maybe another lens with the change. I wanted the nikon 70-200 for a few years and was very happy to get it with my new D610, I am gutted to see the sigma is sharper.


Any ideas from you guys would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance John

Welcome to the forums!

I would start with going through an AF fine tune with both lenses, as different lenses sometimes react differently due to manufacturing variances. There are guides on how to do that manually here, or there's software to help automate it.

I had the Nikkor 70-200 vr ii /2.8 and I was very pleased with everything but the size. It weighed as much as a cannonball and was very large. That's one of the reasons I went Sony FF. I love the Sony gear! Welcome to the website. I did buy the Nikon D7100, and have the 18-140 lens. Great camera.

Something is wrong if you get that result and as others have said it may need fine tuning. My 70-200 needed quite a bit.

Whenever I use the 70-200 the sharpness always leaps out at me so it's a very good lens. When I use my Tamron (not sigma but similar sharpness) I'm impressed by the sharpness for cost and focal length but not in the same league.

The other thing with the 70-200 is you can shoot at 2.8 and it's very sharp which is what you're paying for with that lens.

Also factoring that zoom lenses get soft at the long end, and in this case the 70-200mm is almost at the end of its range while the 150-600 is still very short. Both lenses are stopped down so neither is running wide open (assuming f/7.1 as indicated), so while I'm surprised at the reported results I can also rationalize them ... at least to myself.

Shoot both at 2.8 and compare... ;)

In all seriousness, it could be any number of things. Try AF tuning your nikon lens. Try a few different shots - just because your aperture and focal length were the same, was your shutter speed / ISO?

If you never have a requirement to shoot at 2.8, then sell the 70-200, if however you want the smooth awesome creaminess that only 2.8 can give you, keep it. :)

Thank you all for your answers.
I will be doing af tuning tomorrow night I hate that work gets in the way of my photography.
I did take many other shots with both this was just one,
Also what some of you said is bang on i did not buy the 70-200 to use at f/7.1 I paid the money for it because it is fast I just went for 7.1 at 185 as a random point where the lenses overlap .
