Any concert photographers here??

I got a photo pass to shoot at the 311 show in Houston next Friday. I'll be shooting with my nikon d7000, since I don't want to rent a full frame camera. I will however rent a prime lens for the event. Which would you think would be best the 24-70 or 70-200 nikon??

I'm not a concert photographer but I have shot some concerts and of those two I'd want a 70-200mm f/2.8 personally.

Not to be a Dickle, but those are zooms. It depends on if you want to shoot wide or tight. If you want to capture the whole band or several musicians in one frame, the 24-70, if you want to get close (guitar player with guitar), you'll need the 70-200. Plus, in potential low light situations, the VR on the 70-200 might come in handy.

Correct, you mentioned zooms in your OP.

I shoot shows with a D7100. I use a 70-200 f2.8 primarily and have used a 17-50mm f2.8 as well. Last night I used my 35mm 1.8G instead of the 17-50, I'll be going through those images later today.

I'd rent a 70-200mm f2.8 VR/VC for sure.

I'd take the Tokina 11-16 2.8 and Nikon 35mm 1.8 that you have in your sig. Should be all set with that

I agree with Joe. You have lenses that cover the 24-70 range (more or less). Wide shots are cool. I've shot with the Tokina and Nikon 17-55 on my D7000 at a few events and got some fun pics. Most of my recent concert stuff is FX with the 24-70 and 70-200 with some ultra wide thrown in with the 14-24. Photos shot with the 70-200 tend to be my favorites. You can get closer to the emotion with a tele, but you're further from the totality of the situation. Although, there's always cropping.

Appreciate the input....I'll be taking the Tokina for wide shots, the 35, and will rent the 70-200 2.8, hopefully I can get a few good shots, only have 3 songs.

Get the 2.8's. LOL. I have a Tamron 70-200 2.8 on the way but it did me little good yesterday. I never expected to get this close and I only had my Sigma 18-250 3.5-6.3. This was at the local Homecoming and I had just planned on walking around taking pics of this and that. As things sometimes happen, I got right up to the stage when the Marshall Tucker Band was playing. All things considered the pics turned out O.K. but I wish my new lens was here.
