Regal Male Lion

Here's another capture from Thursday's zoo visit. I do love the big cats and always strive to photograph the zoo's sole male lion. He was particularly cooperative that day.

He does seem to like to pose!

I noticed with the shots of this particular lion you stayed with an exposure bias of zero, as opposed to underexposing the others. Any particular reason? I'm working on my use of the EV control and am just curious. It looks to me that you actually had more direct light here.

Unless I'm bracketing or the contrast level is quite wide I don't use exposure compensation. The reason is that I shoot in RAW and know the latitude of any shot is wide enough to compensate in post processing. I was physically quite a distance away from the lion so I zoomed as close as possible with the 18-200mm F/3.5-5.6 VRII to lessen the cropping and get a more accurate exposure.

Nice capture Bob.

I just looked at your photo gallery. Many memories flooded back due to my time in Japan. I also worked for McDonnell Aircraft in St. Louis for 13 years. I've crawled all over the F-18, F-15, AV8B and others. I feel really old going to an aircraft museum seeing planes I worked on over 40 years ago. While on active duty I mainly worked on the F-4 Phantom.
