Advice on D800-Concerned About File Size

Something I am going to try and I would like to see the experiment duplicated by someone else. I think I mentioned this above, but my D800 files are opening faster in LR 5.3 than the files from my D7100. I have not had my D7100 out since my D800 arrived. I believe I was shooting my D7100 with lossless compression. My D800 in shot with no compression.I am going to try shooting my D800 with lossless compression and with no compression and see how long LR 5.3 takes to render each. I suspect it may take LR more time to uncompress and render the compressed files than to render the uncompressed files. Files from both cameras load very quickly into the LR 5.3 watch folder. The vast majority of the time is spent rendering the files. I will report back in a day or two. I will repeat the process with both cameras with several images.Look forward to hearing from you all.Roger

It looks like you are having too much fun already. I also use lossless compressed raw files. A little easier on my hard drives.

Update. I love my D800. It did take longer to transfer and process the files but it was just okay on my old desktop. I solved the problem by building an i7 4790K machine with four SSD's and a RAID 10 using four mechanical drives. Problem solved and life is good.

The resolution of the D800 is great for the work I do.

That's the next serious piece of photography gear I need, a custom PC. As for D800 file sizes, I had been using 14 bit uncompressed without any real comprehension or education. Once I did some online research, I switched to 12 bit RAW lossless compressed. Checking file sizes on a shot just now:

12 bit compressed 31mb
12 bit lossless compressed 35mb
14 bit uncompressed 75mb
