I am trying to choose between the Tamron 150-600mm, Sigma 150-500mm and the Nikon AF 80-400 D. I am mainly into wildlife and birds. Any suggestions?

If having the choice I'd pick the big Tam. You have to embrace the possible annoyances however. Consider it like being married.

The AF-D 80-400 is not a good bird lens, AF is very very slow. It's old technology that was released back in 2000 if I remember correctly. It doesn't have a focus motor so can only be used on a camera body that has a focus drive and even then it's just too slow for anything moving quickly. The AF-S on the other hand is great, but is a lot more.

I've not used either the Tamron or Sigma, but have seen fairly good results from both.

I would go with the Tamron, it's a great lens.I had a Sigma 150-500mm and sold it because it was too soft. I have the Tamron and it gives me some great pictures with detail!

You could also try the new Sigma 150-600 Sports or the more budget friendly Sigma 150-600 Contemporary. I suggest renting one before buying. Nothing like having one in your hands to help you decide. Just my $0.02.

Went through my pics of the Bonaparte's gulls and found this one completely upside down. These guys don't fly straight always twisting and turning not a great pic.

Trying my hardest to achieve a decent bird in flight photo. I know the equipment isn't top notch but I am sure I could do better. I certainly could use some tips

You did alright there, the only way is to keep practicing if you have sea gulls near you they are great learning subjects, what most BIF photographers will not tell you is how many failures they have :D
